Hello all. I'll be posting the games that I create in my game programming class here. Hope that they aren't designed too badly, but I got to start somewhere.

Ping

I've just finished my first project - a game called "Ping". I did not come up with that name. I'd call it "the bounce block game" if I could, but "Ping" seems to be a better choice. :P

Now we'll see if I can properly upload the file... Ok, I believe I figured out how to upload it correctly. :)

Ice Breakers

I finished my second project two weeks ahead of schedule, but someone didn't realize that it would take another two weeks to work out the problems in the game so it is probably a good thing that she finished it early.

Ice Breakers indeed... I think I need the ice to put on my hurt head from trying to break it. Or was the ice in my head and I was trying to break it? ;):P:P

Cat Burglar

I finished my third project two weeks ahead of schedule without having any problems. I even had time to add more sounds into the game. Cat Burglars has been the easiest game so far and I only had to look at half of the destructions to properly build it! :) I must be learning something... ;):cool:

Oh Dear. Showing my age, I can remember owning a pong .... sorry a Ping type game. Way back in the early 70's. Too cool for school. Love it.

:cool: Downloaded and played. No bugs to report. I especially liked the ability to use my joystick. What's next? Tank, maybe?

Norton Security is not letting me download, save or run the program telling me it is unsafe and can harm my computer!.....Aaaargh!...but I remember writing a similar program in Basic on my Spectrum 48K where you bounce a block with a paddle....;):P:cool:

:) I'm glad you like it Bleve. This is the first "Ping" game I've owned, but not the first one I've played.

:o Marvin, I didn't even know that a joystick could be used... I'll have to check that out... I wonder if I just clicked on something that I may or may not have been part of the lesson or if the program I used to build it does that automatically. Let's see how much trouble I can get into by going back into the game program... :P

What is next? Hmm... a game called "Ice Breakers". I haven't finished my hours on working on "Ping" yet though. It took me 8 out of 14 hours to complete. I'll need the other 6 hours to work on other, less likable subjects. ;) I also need to help Kat finish her "Ping" game... and get her to post it. :cool:

:cool: Maarschalk, my Mom recently started using Norton for my computer too... and that program really does need trouble shot. :mad: With a 12 gauge or something bigger. I don't have time to fight with it, yet I'm having to make time to fight with it anyway. If only I dared to uninstall it from my computer after re-installing the other security program I had... after what happened though, I'm not that brave. ;)

Thank you to everyone who tested it for me. :) I really appreciate it.

Now I'm off to go try to catch some time... at least this weekend is a four-day weekend so I can catch up on my other subjects... and maybe some writing... and maybe some explosions... why am I still typing? I don't know.

:cool: I did a scan of Cindy's program (btw, Cindy ... I'd change the title of this topic to "Cindy's Game Portfolio") and it came back clean.

Well... I finally got my second game, Ice Breakers, finished and now I'm moving on to the next project - sleep. Too many late nights last week trying to get it to work. I think I deserve a couple extra hours of sleep tonight. :)

Hope ya'll enjoy Ice Breakers. I, for one, am totally sick of it... I played it at least 50 times while building it. I could probably build it even now in my sleep... so I am not recommending ya'll to play it 50+ times. Once or twice will do. ;)

Next game was finished instead of doing other things that I should have been doing (like English, History, and Geometry), but... ;):P:P:P Anyway, this game is called Cat Burglar and it is a maze game. I added many items to it that weren't on the checklist, so maybe I can get some extra credit for it from my teacher. :cool: Not that I need the extra credit in this particular class... but still any extra credit is good... ;)

:cool: Ice Breakers puts a nice twist on an old arcade game. For that one, you should get an A.

OK... I'm now learning DarkBasic Professional... and have made 2 really basic programs... a spinning 3D cylinder and a bouncing ball.

I am trying to make a Pong game again... and failing miserably. :( I've been working at it for 2 hours, double and triple-checked the instructions that I got for how to do it and the game ain't working still! *sigh* The ball will only bounce straight up and down... it won't go at an angle so that you can hit it with the paddles. Can someone please give me a hint as to what I did wrong?

Here is the complete code (or you can download the source-code file for DBPro here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?fmipwow7dwbo9hl):

Rem Project: Pong
Rem Created: Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Rem ***** Main Source File *****

rem Simple Pong game

rem make some variables
speedx as integer = -2
speedy as integer = 1
px1 as integer = 600
py1 as integer = 240
px2 as integer = 20
py2 as integer = 240
score1 as integer = 0
score2 as integer = 0

rem slow down the game
sync on
sync rate 40

rem the game runs in a loop
do
cls

rem check shift/ctrl keys to move the left paddle
if shiftkey()
dec py2, 2
if py2 < 0 then py2 = 0
ENDIF
if controlkey()
inc py2, 2
if py2 > 470 then py2 = 470
ENDIF

rem check up/down keys to move the right paddle
if upkey()
dec py1, 2
if py1 < 0 then py1 = 0
ENDIF
if downkey()
inc py1, 2
if py1 > 470 then py1 = 470
ENDIF

rem move the ball
inc ballx, speedx
inc bally, speedy
circle x, y, 40

rem bounce ball off top/bottom of the screen
if bally < 0 or bally > 470 then speedy = speedy * -1

rem see if left player missed the ball
rem if so, player 2 scores, reset the ball
if ballx < 0
inc score2, 1
ballx = 320
bally = 240
speedx = 2
sleep 500
ENDIF

rem see if right player missed the ball
rem if so, player 1 scores, reset the ball
if ballx > 630
inc score1, 1
ballx = 320
bally = 240
speedx = -2
sleep 500
ENDIF

rem draw the ball
circle ballx, bally, 10

rem draw the paddles
box px1, py1, px1+16, py1+64
box px2, py2, px2+16, py2+64

rem let's see if the ball has hit a paddle
if point(ballx+5,bally+5) > 0
speedx = speedx * -1
ENDIF

rem print the scores
text 0, 0, "SCORE" + str$(score1)
text 550, 0, "SCORE" + str$(score2)

rem draw the screen
sync
LOOP

Now... I don't really want the answer pointed out to me... I'd just like a hint as to where I went wrong if anyone can give me one... :)

:cool: I have yet to familiarize myself with DB but, making a wild guess, where in the program does the LOOP loop back to?

The loop is from the "do" command to the "loop" command... everything in between those two commands are done over and over again... I guess I don't see what you are getting at?

Edit: The lines:
rem move the ball
inc ballx, speedx
inc bally, speedy
circle x, y, 40

should increase the balls position -2 on the x coordinate and 1 on the y coordinate because of the variables earlier... or should I try moving the variables into the loop?

:cool: Are your subroutines in the same order as they were in your other (non-DB) pong game?

There should be an option in Norton to notify and give an option if a program is not prevalent. I'm assuming that that's the reason it's saying it can harm your computer. It's not in their database. Of course I don't use Norton so I could be blowing smoke here not knowing what I'm talking about. But what good is an anti-virus program that takes away your options? It should warn you and if you choose to go ahead, it's on your own head and your responsibility. I prefer Avast! That gives you the choice to run it normally, although it does suggest protected mode, if it isn't prevalent enough.

Just downloaded and played all 3. Ping works as advertised, no bugs. Ice Breakers is a very good game but I would put in a difficulty setting that would vary the size of the paddle. It's huge. As for Cat Burglar, It's fun once or twice, but with only 1 level it gets old quick.

Still these were a very good effort. You show a lot of promise in game building programming.
