Is it possible to deploy gates in Evocron Merc?
If not, can everyone create a mod to establish new gate lines?

In Renegades it was also possible in Multiplay!....Legends was only in single play!

did you guys play x3? for me the climax dropped after finnishing the hub quest and beeing able to reach my tactical core systems in a glimpse.
from there on it was just 'keeping control of forces' and modding it to shreds.
eve online? the oldtimers will remember: didn't the game loose a good portion of its flair (feeling of universe size as well) with the invention of capital ships (titan bridges) and jump bridges?
you can fight that, you can adopt. but such systems will always be in favour of people with isk and man power.
don't get me wrong. it has its value set and makes sense. but as a litte pirate who played of the horde in small tactical wings.. naeh. it encouraged blob warefare².
and as dave said: what if the game grows in scale? not only universe-wise but also player wise? full servers..
one could limit the ammount of gates, but how?
its interesting but as with the above mentioned examples i'm seeing the bad aspects first.

A few random thoughts:
If we build a gate in every main system to every other main system (present gated systems plus the main named ones like Riftspace, Vonari, Lost Rucker etc) there would be nearly a thousand gates. Using the present gates you can travel from one side of the core to the other in a few minutes.
if you add the "uncharted" systems (around 100 or so) into the mix you would need over seventeen thousand gates!
Each jump needs two gates and the formula for the the total number of gates needed is: (number of systems linked) x (number of systems linked - 1)
If people built their own gates at secret locations then the numbers would spiral! Unless someone advertised their gate location and destination then the gates would be useless to everyone else unless you wanted to randomly explore
They would be the sole artifact in the game that would be of little use to anyone other than the creator
Perhaps the gates could be "one shot", very expensive to deploy and require coordinates to be entered for the destination point - you would need to know where to go to be able to get there quickly - a money sink, solves the clutter problem of thousands of anonymous gates but does allow nearly instant travel if appropriate
