I downloaded the mercenary customisation kit from the site, copied the /hud folder into my merc directory and get an error regarding a missing dat file.

Do I need to install all the folders in the kit or is the kit out of sync with the latest game version?

You only put the files in the HUD folder ( do not put a / in front of it ) that you want to use. The files you put in will be used instead of the default files that come with the game. You do not see the default files as they in in the encrypted part of the game. Say if you want to use a different compass ( as an example only) you would put that in your hud FOLDER and the game would use that.:)

Just copy the files you are modding and not the whole folder contents.

 In other words: you create a folder, call it hud, put your unzipped mods into the hud folder, and put the hud folder in the main game directory.

Made sure you use Lower Case letters for the Folder. Name it " hud " and Place it in your sw3dg Evochron Mercenary Folder in your C: files.
