(No) Sound in Space (EM/AA)

Post by 8rennus »

I've always wanted the option to disable external sound in (space) games that had an atmosphere (pun?) of realism, but very few (if any) games give you that option. I decided since EM was so easy to mod that I would do it myself. While I understand that adding sound in space serves as an external feedback mechanism, it can still suck you back in from your suspension of disbelief when everything else feels realistic.

I created .wav files related to external sounds (weapons, explosions...) as silent .wav's, essentially converting the simulated vacuum of space into a...vacuum of space. Everything from beam weapons, missiles, and exploding space craft are now silent events in space. Sounds that come from your cockpit are the only sounds you'll hear, such as radio chatter, betty, and any other sound related to your ship. The one exception is the mining beam, which I determined to be internal as the sound created wouldn't come from the beam, but from the source of the beam, which is internally contained within the ship.

Feedback is welcome.

What about when you get hit by weapons fire or when you fire your guns?, the vibrations through the ships hull and frame should produce a sound and sounds from any vibrations of debrie of explosions hitting your ship!....;)

I've already thought about that. Sounds such as collisions, shield impact, engines and thrusters, and anything else related to your ship could produce sound internally, so I decided to leave 'em in. The one major exception is weapons. I've decided since weapons are likely to be mounted externally, or enclosed in a buffer internally, sound would be inaudible from the cockpit.

If you disagree, simply delete the files gunx.wav (1-15), laser.wav, and missle.wav.

Who knows the sounds could still be created artificially by the ship. Acoustically it would be the space equivalent of the cash register at WAWA.

WAWA is a gas station in my area with a cash register that makes all kind of artificial sounds.

Yes, the sound could be picked up by your radio scanners speakers from what is happening in side the other ships so you here the other pilot scream when you hit him over the radio and hear his ship explode while he is trying to transmit his surrender!......;):P:P:P:P:P
