It gives you greater protection when docked at the station. It also means items are reduced in price by 25% (both for things you buy and things you sell).

Buying a Station license alone will not change your reputation level...

station license decreases item prices by 25% and increases what they pay for your stuff by 25%

so its great if you're running a regular trade route and want to squeeze some extra profit

Without a license, enemy ships can attack you even when you're docked (unless you're in the hangar or shipyard). To avoid being attacked, you either purchase a license or build your own trade station (it automatically comes with a license).
