Running a laptop as a server?

Post by spiritgod »

First off, I wasn't sure where to post this, so if by chance this is the wrong place, please forgive me and maybe point me in the right direction.

I've been toying upon the notion of creating a server for this game, a place me and a few friends could hangout and do whatever.

I have an old gaming laptop that I no longer use, and was wondering if using a laptop would hinder the capabilities of using it as a server for this game? The specs run within the middle of required and recommended, but I'll list them just in case.

Intel core 2 duo 2.0 GHz CPU
4 GB RAM (not sure of the speed, if that matters)
GeForce 8800M GTS with 512MB
And is running Windows Vista 32bit, which means the system doesn't see all 4GB of RAM.

I've never attempted this before, since most of my gaming is done either on console or PC single player. Also, do I need to purchase another license for the game or is the server download free?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you plan on running your server 24/7 or only during specified hours?

More than likely specified hours, this laptop can get pretty hot.

Your laptop should work fine. I use mine for hosting, too.
Time is an illusion.
Lunchtime doubly so.

Okay, I've done a fresh install, and am about to do a full driver update on all essentials. Do I need to buy the game again or is the server software free?

Running a laptop as a server?

I have the laptop with a fresh install, which is what I'm typing on now. I installed the server program, but every time I try to run the program I get an error message that says, "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_31.dll was not found." Once I hit OK another error message pops up that says, "Failed to load DLL (2: DBProSetupDebug.dll)" My version of Evochron Mercenary is the Steam version, which both Steam and Evochron is installed on this laptop, same error came up before I installed the game. What am I doing wrong? Should I run the game on this laptop and have Steam download Direct X (insert number), and could DarkBASIC pro be causing issues? I only ask that because of the second error message.

Nevermind, the Direct X not being installed was the problem.
