Post by KingArthur »

I am Looking for a Copy of Windows 7 64 bit, the Basic Edition. I Believe it is Labeled "Premium" or "Home"

The Best Price I Have Found Currently is $118.00 USD.

If anyone Knows Where I Might be Able to Purchase a LEGAL Version for Less, Please Contact Me via U2U.

Thanks.

I think OEM is normally purchased in combination with hardware, im not sure just a OEM is enough...

Anyway good luck with finding your copy, im sure ebay and sites like that will have a nice offer for you.

EU_NL is right. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. And reffers to equipment made by the original manufacturer that can be marketed and packaged by other companies!....;)

WOW that's expensive. I believe in Holland Windows only costs like 40 or 50 Euro's, so you might want to check Dutch sites. Although you will probably have to pay extra for shipping fees, it may be worth the trouble.

Good luck.

OEM are supposed to be sold with hardware.

In Sweden the seller doesn't care about that and sell the software anyway;)

I got mine for about 95euro.

afaik the upgrade packs cost around 40-50€, but the standard is roughly 100e. Atleast over here in finland :)

All in all, afaik the pricepoint for win7 home premium oem is roughly 100€/$ (funny how it is) everywhere

edit: of course, of course...

Thanks All. Seems that $118 USD Is on Par with What I Am Seeing World Wide Here.

Malix.what is the "Upgrade Pack"? I Am Currently Using WinXP PRO. I Love It but the OS Limits RAM to 3.25GB of 4GB Stick(s)

there are 2 kinds of windows 7 packages: upgrade and retail/oem

Difference being that upgrade is just what it sounds like, you have a currently installed windows, get upgrade & install it -> BAM! win7. The derpy-thing is that when you need a reinstall, you have to install the old windows first & then upgrade.

the retail/oem version is just a normal install medium. pop it in & install straight to win7.

the upgrade version is a lot cheaper, but it takes few hurdles to jump over (the older version of windows). And afaik the full version can be used for an upgrade too, but don't quote me on this.

according to my local retailers website, win7 upgrade -box sells for 112€ (holy... WAT?!), so I was waayyyyy off before. My bad.
Normal retail win7 home premium ~180€ (yes, really). I'd still say go for OEM, since that seems to be around 100€.

tl;dr; win7 upgrade costs roughly as much as the oem, so don't bother & get oem.

EDIT: just because I'm a DERP, I can't post anything with one go. :D

Win7 (or vista) isn't a magic bullet which makes you able to use more than 3.25GB of ram, you need a 64bit version of it, so if you're getting one: make sure you can actually run a 64bit windows (ie, you have a processor with 64bit capabilities. afaik almost any cpu made after 2005 is cabable)

Just thought to point this out, in case you weren't already aware :)

Thanks Malix. VISTA Is Out of the Quesrtion So Win7 Home Premium 64 bit seems to be the Way to Go. It's Unfortunate I can't Upgrade WinXP Pro to a 64 Bit OS. That Would Be The BEST I could ask Fot. I DO like My XP. lol.

its such a rip off. I'm coming from the linux world, where I don't pay for my OS.
that said my work/production computer has to run windows for some software. in that case, I never ever buy windows on its own. I always get it with the pc.
microsoft wonders why so much piracy of windows is happening. they need to look at their crazy DRM and prices.

$118 man how cheap. Double that, and you have the price in Australia. We are constantly being ripped off by software sellers.

Yeah. I'm Figuring That Out Now. Malix is at 100 Pounds, approx. $265 CDN, Viper is At 50 Euros approx $85CDN.

Seems $118 USD Isn't as Bad as I Though. lol.

No, I Just Want to Expand My RAM and PROCESSOR and with XP 32 Bit I'm VERY LIMITED. I'm Even Looking into XP 64 Bit. It can Support 16GB of RAM, though I'll probably Stick with 8GB and a Good Quad Core.

I'd say don't. afaik xp 64bit isn't even really released (the one floating on the webs is some kind of leaked dev-preview or something), you'd just be asking for trouble with that as there are next to none software support for it.

edit2:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP ... it_Edition
appears I was wrong on it not being released, but its party discontinued & dead. My point still stands: don't get it ;)

Newegg is always a good source...99.00 free shipping

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116986

Have used them for years..great service and return policies on most items. Hard to beat their pricing on about anything computer related.

oem= you don't get a manual or pretty box.. but the full version is there.

They had the pro version for the same price about a month ago..
but unless your planing to run an OLD XP only game or spreadsheet, app etc. and want a virtual XP system within windows 7 your just wasting your money on the pro version.. although, it does work as they state.. and clipboard does pass seamlessly between the two.. it's just over kill imho.

Also, imho anything over 8 gigs is again "overkill" but it's nice saying "I got 16 gigs". In reality, I map some games and objects under a few different setups. Unreal etc.. and I truely rarely go over 10 gigs in use.. I have never come close to 8 gigs in any game by itself. There might be something out there that can use the extra ram, I just have not found it yet. I am sure 8 gigs will give the boost in performance from 4 gigs though.

I would suggest the SSD drives for the best boost.. Intel z68 chipset motherboards are reasonably priced and can make a nice Hybrid Raid system with hardly any knowledge needed.. so you can have your TB regular HD on C and just cache a 64gig or less SSD.. pushing you to 250 mb/s on sataII and 500mb/s on SataIII..

I know .. more info than asked for..sorry..I ramble at times..:)

Here is a great upgrade system to put together:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBund ... mbo.789219

Throw in a good graphics card and watercooler..

I7 system would have a hard time beating it (probably 2-10 FPS per game with same graphics cards), and not by much.. especially in this price range!
