Changing the music files?

Post by Raynor »

I'm pretty sure i read something about this on this board. I like the game's music but it's starting to be a little too repetitive, how can i change the music and are there limitations?

Well I did exactly as the readme said (used ogg files that i named musiclevel1-1.ogg, and so on) and well, when i load my pilot profile, the music that start is always one of those i added so i know it worked BUT when i actually launch, it gets to a 100% and then invariably crashes (i tried it about 5 times). When i removed the audio files, it loaded fine. So as it is i can't change the music files cause it won't load the game..anybody has any ideas?

 If your files are too large, try trimming them down to the same size (byte-wise) as the originals.

Hmm... how can I know how big the originals are?

And is that what's causing the game to crash then? The files being too big?

 This program is compact ... just about every bit and byte is accounted for. Vice can tell you how big to make the files so as to keep within limits.

What are your System Specs? Try using the 4GB_Patcher/or Large address aware on your Evochron Mercenary .exe file. Something is blocking your consecutive memory!......;)

Ok. Nevermind what I said above. It worked ONCE. Now it's back to crashing everytime.

My system specs: 4GB of ram on an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.40ghz. I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Not at first but I did eventually change some of the music files but then i did repatch the exe after doing so and it stil didn't work. Actually,it loaded the game again once but it crashed after about a minute, I THINK maybe when it was trying to load a new song. What's that thing about song size? How big should my ogg files be? I think the biggest i got is 7 megs.

I found a thread from 2010 where someone had the exact same problem, doesn't seem it got resolved either. At the time Vice asked the person to make sure they had at least between 1 to 2 GB of physical memory available. Well i checked with msinfo, it says 2.86 so i should be good.

It should be consecutive physical memory available!
Did you try Vice's Memory tester for available consecutive memory?

I just did. I passed the first two levels of test. Third level crashed though which i assume it means it fails.

Edit: Considering the other thread that just was created today in which someone also had problems with the music mod, i wonder if there shouldn't be a thread devoted to it? It could be useful for future payers too who might experience similar problems.

Something that wasn't quite clear to me in the instructions, do i need to have an even number of tracks for each threat level? Like if i have 10 tunes for threat level one, do i need to have the same number for threat level 2 and 3? I assumed not but now i don't know....

Edit: Gah, i reread the readme and now i realise it has to have the same number from what i gather and it has to always be a multiple of 3. So i couldn't have for example 10 songs in on threat level. I suppose that's what caused the whole thing to crash then? oops... It kinda sucks a little because most of the tunes i have are peaceful and quiet because well, 1 is personally the threat level i'm most often at so i didn't put many songs in threat level 2 or 3 but now i guess i'm gonna have to find several more "aggressive" tunes to match the number of tracks I have for threat level 1. Well....I think i have something new to add in the things i'd like to see in future versions of the game thread...

So it looks like you have barely enough consecutive memory available to run the game with more resource using mods! I would reduce al in game Graphic settings like planet details, Sounds off, Cockpit off...etc and then see if the game works. And if it works then start turning all the things back up a noch one by one to see how far you can go and turn on sounds and music last! to eliminate that it is your music or sound file is causing the problem....;)

Oh the game works without the music mod no problem, I know without a doubt it is the music mod that causes the crash.

iv given up trying to change/add music no matter what i do the game either crashes, or only play 2 of the 45 songs. everything in ogg format, everything done in 3's musiclevel1-1, 2-1, 3-1 all the way to 1-15, even only add 3 songs in the folder... so i now just turn the music off and play my music in a music media-player in the background then start the game up lol.
