Dear Shawn. Dear friends. Russian community of fans of the game EM appears to offer.

Many players - is increasing. Increases and the number of servers. We propose to develop a single, Shawn, a big server for multiple players.

What are the benefits from this:

1. More fun games.
2. Easier to track pirates and block them.

Ever since that steam sale this game's been in the top seller for a while.

If I am correct the current server program architecture only supports up to 35 players per server at a time. The limits may be reduced depending on the player owned machine's connection speed and stess limits which vary from server to server. I think it would be awesome to see a server that could handle 100+ at a time, but we're going to have to be patient because Vice can only work so fast and so many hours in a day. If you think about how much time he's already spent dumping his imagination into this game, I think you'll uderstand.

No problem, we can wait ... We would like to know: Is there a desire in the world community of EM for a single, overall, the official server? And there is the desire and opportunity for Shawn - to do this?

For what it's worth, I like the idea and see people talking about it all the time on my server. One machine will only get you so far.

Could it be possible to "link up" several servers in a cluster so that we all fly in the same universe?

There is also the issue of only 12 players in a sector at once that would need to be addressed! We were having that problem in Dingo's server, there was like 15 players all of us wanting to go warzone contracts together but only about 12 of us cold fit in the sector before it stopped anyone else from entering. I think it could be increased depending on the server, we did not have any lag problems with the big group we had all shooting stuff at once!

I think it's an awesome idea. But we're talking a dedicated server here, which can cope with the load. Dedicated servers cost money. Any thoughts on that?...
Also, if a server has around 100 players on, some serious problems may arise for those players who live furthest from the server location. Depending on the quality of the box.

Russian community has a dedicated server. However, the game server must be compatible with the system of the physical server.

I suppose the ping rates would have to be tested from the farthest locations in case some can't meet and ping requirements also.:)

I just started a EU server two days ago and as far as i can tell (from the logging) its hard to get some players :-)

What i mean by that is that i see 3-4 players online and thats it, i limited my server to 15 but ive never seen 15 players online..

I thought the server would be swarmed by players but no..not yet at least...

But i fully support one big(ger) server for people to hang out at.

Hey EU_NL

I'm sure the players will come, like they have on the other servers. There's plenty of players from Europe. I'd hop on there myself if I could (I'm from the Netherlands too so the ping would be awesome!), but I only have time to play on one server and I have decided to dedicate my time to the USS one.

Thank you for hosting yet another server though, and best of luck with the players. Keep us posted! ;)

Yes, with 8 Servers up now it will be hard to get a full Server specialy for a starting Server so just give it some time and I'm sure it will pick up soon!.....;)

 With territorial demands on the increase, new servers should attract new players looking for star systems void of clan tags. The older the server (and the guy running it), the less likely somebody will find an empty star system. (Of course, the option to invade another clan's territory is always on the table, Mable.)

Dedicated servers aren't that expensive when they're communal. If people pool their money together coming up with a few hundred or even thousand dollars every month isn't hard to do.

That being said, I'd be more than willing to chip in for a decent server.

I can't speak for the whole community, but I definitely have a desire for something like this.

The biggest criticism my friends give me when I try to get them interested in playing EM is them telling me they don't like how few players can be on a server.

there is a config option to raise that limit in the dedicated server program

I really hope Vice do one thing in the future - build a dedicated server software for EM, one that is not player limited, maybe not OS limited, or even one that would allow scaleing of sectors or quadrants over multiple machines (clowd)

That's a lot of work, and I can't comprehend how much work it really is.

So I'll leave it at wishful thinking :)

I really agree on that one. It's much more fun to meet all the
friends I made through this game on one server all together
then chasing them jumping servers!

Well, right now all clients and servers are limited to Windows XP/Vista/Win7. That's in the requirements. And a WinXP client can connect to a Win7 server. It's just data that's being transferred. 1's and 0's.

While 1 big official server is a good idea in theory it's not practical becaused of the pings. If you have the official server in the UK, people in Australia, California and such are going to have rather high pings. The same applies if it is located in the USA, Australia, Moscow, wherever. Some are going to have High pings. The farther away the server is located the higher the ping.

As for the player proximity, that's determined by line 505 of Text2.dat for the server you are playing on. The default is 3 which is 12. On mine, it has been changed to 4, setting the cap to none. Just changed it. I'd restart now, but people are playing so it will take effect at next restart which is 4:00am CDT 5-12-12.

Good idea, just doesn't seem workable right now cause of the pings. Might be in the future though.

Are we talking about "official" as in "the only publicly available, subscription so you have to pay to play"?

I'm playing on galactica 1 most of the time, which is a server in UK, and I'm connecting from Croatia.
I do have ping issues in pvp combat situation, but that could be game network traphic design issue more then anything, since I didn't experience those high ping issues playing other MP games.

While don't know anything about game engine or network traphic design, I do think, from experience, that this high ping issues can be related to format and size of the network traphic packages, and the number and optimisation of calculations client engine has to do before returning data to the server for new calculations.

I was paying subscription of EVE online for years, and I wouldn't really mind paying for a consistant and lag free gameplay of this wonderfull game.

I would love to see a grand server with no player limitations or even 100 player limit. I used to play Kuma games that had hundreds of players and it was awesome experience and this game blows that game away.
I would get rid of the in game chat because it steals valuable game resources. Everyone uses Team Speak and most of the EM servers and players have a seperate TS or mumble chat channel.
The problem with the today's public servers is ping issues especially as the player count gets close to 15 or more players or more then 12 players in a sector on one server.
I am thankful to all the good people who donate their servers for us to play and of course our TS servers to talk on.
This is a great gaming community with really good people and aliens life forms.
