The test picks the server location to ping to as far as I have noticed so each person may get a different result no matter what.

Besides your connection of course, it all depends on where you are pinging to. So can anyone tell me where the USS server is located so I can ping to there?

@TT: Yes you can select a server. The white dots on the top screen are server hubs (I think they're called?). If you hold your mouse over one, you will get a list of servers to choose from in that region. You can do that with every white dot, there's hundreds.

Yes, partially. Your ISP package determines your maximum connection speed. But you will probably only reach your maximum speeds if you're pinging to a local server and during down times. How fast your connection is to a server far away, like an overseas server, depends on a lot of other things, like how many hubs it needs to cross, the quality of the lines between you and the ping location, traffic on the network, etc etc. You can have the best connection in the world, but if the lines in between are crap you will get bad results nonetheless. Then again, the better your ISP package, the better the end result.
The results you got are expected for your connection if you ping to a nearby server (which Speedtest.net automatically does if you don't tell it to do otherwise). If you were to try it to a server overseas, you will likely only get a fraction of the result.

As you can see, a huge difference in ping and also the download speed is about half when pinging to Boston.

Ping 10ms
Download 18.65 Mbps
Upload 3.71 Mbps

Second attempt same time

Ping 10ms
Download 10 Mbps
Upload 3.71 Mbps

Third attempt same time

Ping 10ms
Download 10 Mbps
Upload 3.71 Mbps

I ran it about six times and the Ping and upload are pretty consistent. Only one that fluctuates a lot is the Download between 8 and 19 Mbs I only one time of the six got close to 19 Mbs and that was on the first test
the rest was between 8 and 13 Mbs for Download!

Thanks! from UK on a 10Mb max fibre optic line

Boston: Ping 109 - 115 up: 0.98 Down: mainly 3.5 - 4.5 with some 5(ish) and once a 9.59!

I suppose it could be described as a bit variable!! :D
