Hey Dingo Bosephus here otherwise known as Jonas Bogg in the verse. My favorite scifi book is 1632 by Eric Flint, it's an alternate reality tale of a mining town in westvirginia. It was so good i read it in a day and ahalf. Lucky for me it was the first book of a series.

David Weber's Harrington (and associated) series are a good read and will keep you occupied for a VERY long time. He really deep-dives into his universe with great detail.

I've also gotten into Harry Turtledove's alternate history books (quasi sci-fi, but worth your time). I really enjoyed his 3-book series about WWI and what would happen if it was fought in the U.S. as well as Europe.

True. But they would be a better read if Harrington was a better tactician.

If you're into old-fashioned space operas I'd recommend Doc Smith's Lensmen series.

I've read tons of SciFi, with the Dune series being at top my list. Particularly the 'prequel' series leading up to the point in time where the events in "Dune" take place.

Hi Sundalo.

I found this link with a free download:
http://ebookbrowse.com/douglas-hill-las ... d122655307

I haven't read the books my self yet, so I can't confirm it's the correct one.

Thanks Seejay, I always enjoy the fan fiction here at the forums but enjoy similar stuff already published when available. :)

Hello all,

Yes, I thought you might have a thread on best sci fi books. Thank you for the suggestions. Some of these I have not heard of.

Here is my dilemma. I have gotten VERY picky about the prose quality of what I read. And most recent authors since the invention of the word processor and the discovery of the joys of Self Induced Attention Deficit Disorder, write like present day college graduates: (ie: at the third grade special students level). It seems only the English or the Scottish can still write coherently in our mother tongue.

Examples = I read Dune again after a long, long interval from the first times and was amazed at the inferior quality of the writing. As wonderful as the story is, the writing is substandard. Although I grew up on Heinlein and enjoyed his novels immensely, it took me ages to realize what a poor writer he was who only had one idea and suffered gravely from Obsessive Compulsive Syndrome. Arthur Clarke wrote beautifully until the word processor appeared.

What achievements are top tier combing stunning prose, poetic depth, endless invention?

1. Ian Banks, Player of Games. But none of his other books except perhaps The Algabraist.
3. LOTR . Not the Hobbit.
4. Reynolds, House of Suns. So far, none of his others
5. HP, of course...(smile). The most outstanding literary feat of the last century.
6. John Varley: Titan, Wizard, Demon.
7. Islandia, by Austin Tappan Wright. (Beware, you will never see this world the same.)

Anyway, those are a few for you. If you have any other suggestions since 2011, I would like to hear them!

I did a skin and did not see Robert Heinlein mentioned.

I really liked many of his books.

"Starship Troops" in particular was a favorite of mine. The movie(s) did it an injustice imho. The tech aspects of the books were missed in the movie.

Arthur C Clarke's "Rendezvous with Rama". The 2001/2010 books were some of my favorites too.

Old fiction is fun to read too. Edgar Rice Burrough's "John Carter" (movie) did not get the respect it deserved imho. I think Disney dropped the ball on marketing it and telling what the movie was about. The Princess of Mars series is good.

This is not science fiction but I read all of Robert Howard's Conan series. They were a blast to read and the artwork surrounding the books by Frank Frazetta and Boris Valejo were amazing. I had all the calendars and books by these artists but lost through the years.

have a nice day
