Gaming Site focused on indie games. Don't remember the name, but it was almost surely tweeted by one of the Mojang guys who are some kind of obsessed with indie games. Scrolled over the site, found EM, downloaded the demo. Was certainly annoyed about the length of the demo (only 90 minutes? WTF??) but at the end I thought "Well heck, buy it." That was exactly a week ago, last sunday.
Vice, if you like, consider doubling the demo time. I had only 20 minutes left but I didn't really feel immersed yet, because the controls need some acclimatization and it also needs some time until you know what to do. It's better having the demo run out when the player is already at his third or fourth contract and fully immersed, so the motivation to buy is higher.

If you use the training mode you do not loose any time. You can spend as much time in training mode as you like......

Did a search on Dogpile for 'Best space sims' I've been having withdrawal symptoms since Elite on my old Atari STE. It was on the second page. The X series is great but Evochron Mercenary is the ducks nuts.

Newsletter / Forum. A happy Evochron pilot since Evochron Alliance. I originally found this universe by a Google search (space/trading/Privateer).

I raid periodically the Internet in search of worthy succesors of mighty Elite.
Tried everything, sometimes I believe I've tried every space sim under the sun.
Found and bought EL, found it still pretty rough.
Evochron Mercenary is another story, and that's why I registered

I'm pretty sure it was when I had finished the Freelancer campaign (again) last year and was looking for another space sim. Started with ER, played the trial's tutorial over and over to get used to the flight controls (like Maars was saying, above) then dove into the game itself. The seamless planetary landings are what really got me interested - I had recently been linked this Youtube video by a friend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7eREddMjt4 and Evochron is the game I had been craving since seeing it. Shortly thereafter (about two weeks, according to my e-mail), also bought a license for EL and played that. Eventually, I sort of drifted away from the game, played a lot of others for a while (though no space sims
), came back earlier this year and bought EM. Again drifted off to other games and have now come back again with a vengeance, lol. I recommended the game to my roommate the other day, hopefully he enjoys and buys it. I'm a little surprised I hadn't registered for the forum until now, though.
Anyways, fantastic game, Vice, and still improving. Keep it up!!

I voted for Google search as I was searching for the term 'best space sims'. However, I did not arrive here directly. Instead it was an old forum thread in which people were discussing the best space sims ever made. One of them mentioned Evochron. I can't remember the forum name as I was only passing through on my search.

I first heard about it last week when Zuff posted about it on Shacknews.com
I have been playing these class of games for years, WC, Freespace, Freelancer, EvE Online. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it sooner.

I was reading the Sword of the Stars 2 forums, where people are talking about the state of the game and trying to find alternatives to play while it gets patched. I saw people talking about Evochron, and it seemed to be exactly the kind of game I've been looking for. Considering the amount of fun I've been having and the warm welcome I got on the MP server, I think I was right!

Trancendence looks interesting. How does it compare to Evochron Mercenary? I might give it a try sometime...

Trancendence is 2D with an overhead view, much like the game asteroids.
The star systems are randomly generated in each game, with some things that stay constant.
In Trancendence you need the jump gates to get around, there are only two per star system, and the systems get progressively harder as you go.
The game is about half finished, you can only get to the mid point, but that is still about 20 star systems.
The game has a lot of custom mods from player ships, enemy ships, stations, interfaces, and a lot of God mods, including a test mod that lets you spawn any item in the game.
The game is small, Donationware, and has no installer (just unzip and run the exe file)
Overall I think Trancendence just can't compete with Evochron Mercenary's ship to ship dogfights, eye candy, multi player option, and creating a realistic player experience, but it is still a high quality game.

I first read about Evochron in Egosoft's site in the forum, in the offtopic section. Somebody suggested people who like space sims to try it, I saw videos in youtube and that was that. I was addicted like a popstar in cocaine!!
Ok, nice try. Now... it\'s my turn....
