What is your favorite SF book, and why? I'm looking for new things to read.

Piers Anthony "Bio of a Space Tyrant"

It's 6 books and it takes place in our Solar System.
Both SciFi and Politics, but not to exagerated.

First four of the Dune books by Frank Herbert

The Lensmen series by Doc "Doc" E Smith (the technology is awe inspiring - slide rules for calculations and if you need lots and lots and lots of power, wires metres thick! The genetic breeding programme of the Arisians is also something to comtemplate!)

Try going to Librivox.org. They have a bunch of old scifi books in the public domain you can listen to. I think I have listened to all of Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. G. Wells. Tho they are not my favorites they are nice to pass the time while in the car going to work and back.

Yup, those are some great ones. Did you mean Battlefield Earth?

For me it is the Odyssey series (2001, 2010, 2061 & 3001) by Arthur C Clark. The story is so far ahead of its time and the science is real (in theory anyway). Foundation books by Asimov (in fact most by Asimov) are great as well.

Also read a lot of StarTrek and Aliens novels for the shear escapism and easy readability. No need to think hard about those books. Very good for a pick up/put down/pick up kind of read.

Of course, this one had to come from me:

Drew Karpyshyn - Mass Effect Revelation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Effect:_Revelation)

Its the prequel to the first Mass Effect game.

Though its not very scientific, I love the technologies and the way humanity is part of the whole galaxy.

The "Spinward Fringe" series by Randolph Lalonde is a great read, I highly recomend it!

Currently reading a series called "Star Crusades" by Michael G. Thomas... good story line, not extremely well edited...

Another great series is "Safehold" by David Weber, one I'd recomend highly...

+1 on Spinward Fringe, at least the first several. Things get a little sloppy and could use some more editing on the later books in the series.

Non space-based, I recommend Neal Stephenson - Cryptonomicon or Anathem.

An area yet untouched:

William Gibson - Neuromancer

Neuromancer started it all, a visionary book for something written in the 80's. all of his that have followed have been just as great.

Happy to know there are cyberpunk fans here, Neuromancer is an awesome read! Lol got me into playing the old shadowrun video games and soon to have a shadowrun online game.

I almost hate to admit it, but I still love a good pencil&paper CP2020 game. Nothing like the mean streets of Night City.

And Deus-Ex is still one of the best game series out there.
