Modding background textures

Post by groenelampkap »

Hello,

First of all I would like to say how much I like this game! I've only played the demo but I'm already into modding.

I was wondering if the area preserved for the nebula texture could be enlarged in the game. I see that a system is build from the stars.png texture placing it as a sphere and 2 nebula jpeg textures in the front and the back of said sphere.

No matter what my resolution for the nebula texture is, it will always be the same size in the game.
But in the andromeda section the sphere is build differently. The texture C12.jpg for this section makes up the whole background (multiple copies of this texture I think). Can the same be done for other sectors? Cause then I will have more freedom and space to add nebula and other textures.

Thank you! I hope my explanation was clear enough.

Not really. I posted a FAQ listing how the environment files work ... someplace. But the wife just put dinner on the table and I can't seem to find the FAQ. Maybe later. Dinner is getting cold.

Modding background textures

 Okay, I found something. Most of this is instructions passed down from Vice. Forgive the lack of editing ...
The "NetBack" Text line defines the background texture displayed for the specified area of space. You can either use the default textures or create your own. The default textures are, in most cases, paired. Meaning, when you designate one number (e.g. NebBackText=3), the game will display nebula texture 3 in the forward hemisphere and texture 9 in the aft hemisphere (for reference, when the game starts, your ship is always facing forward).

You always place the forward texture in the “Text line; the aft texture will be displayed automatically. The available pairs are:

1 & 2
2 & 1 *
3 & 9
4 & 8
8 & 4
5 & 7
7 & 5 *
11 & 2

You might notice a few missing texture numbers. The above pairs are all of nebulae in various colors. The remaining textures are not nebulae … but can also be used. Default textures are as follows:

6 (blank … a black background without any additional texture)
10 (the light blue background of Andromeda … a single texture covering the entire sky)
12 (the Milky Way as seem from far away… the aft half of the sky is blank)

You can also swap out a default texture (or pair of textures) for your own customized background. The standard size is 512 x 512 and must be saved as a JPEG. Each custom texture must be given a filename corresponding to one of the texture numbers listed above … appended, at the front, with the letter “c (e.g. c5.jpg).

Custom pairs are the same (1 & 2, 2 &1, 3 & 9, etc.) as default pairs and are defined exactly the same. Unpaired textures will be displayed in the same fashion as in their default mode (i.e. a customized c10 will cover the entire 360 degree sky, top and bottom, back and forth, left and right).

Place your custom background textures in the “environment folder.
Be advised that you can't do anything with "NetBack" ... it's part of a coded file. For mods, follow the part at the bottom.
