I found this while surfing YouTube. Someone decided to set up a Star Wraith game with a voice recognition control.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZRSPXHO ... re=related
It's interesting, though I can push a launch button a lot faster than I can say "Launch missile."
Head to head:
"Launch mi--"
"Click"
Click wins.
Still, it would be useful for more complex tasks, which are don't really appear in Star Wraith. I would like to see something like:
"Equalize shields."
"Consult price index."
"Find gate solution to Rivoch"
"Autopilot to Rivoch"
You get the idea: a command that actually takes longer to do than it does to say would be something you might want to have voice-activation for.
IN any case, this is probably a tech demo, and as such, it is pretty cool. In the future, though, words will be as superfluous with computer games as they are with music. You will think what you want to do, and the game will respond. The drawback is that the game will play you rather than vice versa.

It's kinda cool, but all the times people tried to insert such things into games, it ended up falling flat on it's face. I can imagine it now..
Pilot: Autopilot to nearest station.
And then the game hyperjumps you into the nearest sun and you vaporize.

Actually, I have been using a voice command program for several years.
While I agree with Nigel that it is not wise to use it for weapons and is seldom usefull in any of SW games, I have found it very useful in other games, that have a much longer list of keyboard commands and for commands that are seldom used.
Take BCM 2000 for example. It has over 168 commands including one for "swim"!
Another nice thing I like about a voice command program is the fact that any word or guttural sound is enough to activate the command. You can kinda make up your own language. You can use the voice command for things like "warp/jump", "dock", etc. and for maneuvering thru deck officer menus.
Works for me!
:D
P. S. Screaming commands at your PC while others are in earshot may raise a few eyebrows and suggest to the neighbors that you may be possessed!

I actually set up voice controls for legends with pilfius, didn't use it for essential things like firing and launching countermeasures (though I still mapped most of the stuff), mainly for that "i'm in the future talking to my computer" feel and sense of immersion you get.
It worked pretty well too. The profile is in my profile thread in my sig. Might update it for EM, to be honest I would use it all the time if I didn't have the x52pro and all the buttons mapped to it already. Here are the commands I used.

Yeah, some of those commands look pretty useful, especially for the ones that you don't use often enough to have a convenient key for.
It could also be useful for when your hands are otherwise occupied. For example, if I'm trying to use the strafe, I can't use countermeasures or fire missiles at the same time because the one thumb moves across all of these buttons. Having a voice-activated something might help.
For equalize shields, do you have to keep saying it (like you would hold the button down) or does it equalize completely when you say it just once?

It's pretty much the same thing, just need to add a few commands in there (it just maps to the keyboard and only a few keys have changed/added since Legends). I recommend you download pilfius and try it out. It's free and really easy to use/set up. You need to have the Microsoft speech recognition installed, I think it's already on Windows 7 so that only applies to XP.From post: 107880, Topic: tid=7615, author=mikeuk wrote:Looks good soulsacrifice how would you do it for EM ?
Thanks Mike
Well the way I had to set it up is to press the '[' 10 times (to put it to the extreme value, then it presses ']' 5 times to centre it. This way no matter what position it is currently set at it would end up in the middle. It does all of these keys in milliseconds with one command of course. From post: 107894, Topic: tid=7615, author=Nigel_Strange wrote:For equalize shields, do you have to keep saying it (like you would hold the button down) or does it equalize completely when you say it just once?
The only problem with this is it makes lots of beeping noises but AFAIK it can be exchanged in the custom kit so if you were to use this method it wouldn't be too much of a problem. I use an axis anyway because it's faster and overrides those keys anyway.

are there two "equalise shields"? - one that moves power from good shield sectors to damaged sectors until all four sectors are equal. The one being described here sounds more like the equalise power distribution between guns and shields .

Yeah there should be, I think the power distribution between shields and weapons is actually covered by the "equalise weapons" whereas to even out the shields you use the "equalise shields", it's been a while since I used it but i'm sure they're both there.
Also just noticed some lines are repeated above, this is only because I failed to notice it when getting screenshots of the commands.

The "eqaulize shields" key is numpad 5. You may have to press it more than once. From post: 107980, Topic: tid=7615, author=DaveK wrote:are there two "equalise shields"? - one that moves power from good shield sectors to damaged sectors until all four sectors are equal. Good hunting.
