Screen Resolution

Post by Sinbad »

Hi,

Just trying to configure the game settings to my new computer... I have a couple of queries: My screen's maximum resolution is 2560x1440. But the game won't let me start in that resolution, sayiing that it can't detect the correct resolution. When I reduce my screen resolution to 1920x1080 then it runs ok. I notice that the ingame settings allow for a maximum of 1920x1080 or "optimised". So my question is, is that the maximum resolution I'll get or is there a way to use my screen's higher resolution?

As another question... what effect does it have if I change the ingame "Screen mode" settings?

My specs:

3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
1TB (7200 rpm) hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
running Windows 7 64bit

Thanks in advance

The game won't display the 2560X1440 as a default option (2560X1600 is a default option), so all you'll need to do is open the sw.cfg file in notepad and change the first line to read 2560X1440 (including the capital X). Then launch and test the game. If it's a valid 3D resolution on your system (including supported in your drivers), then it should work.

Screen mode selects the VSync mode and the window mode (either rendering the game in windowed or full screen mode). Leaving it to 'Optimized Max Vsync' is generally the best option.

Thanks Vice for the info. It's working fine now... looks fantastic in full resolution with the large screen. I've got good framerates in the 50's and 60's range with the settings on max, and the game just looks absolutely gorgeous. Still get a slight staggering effect of the image when I pan quickly with large objects on the screen, but that's probably just the limitations of the graphics card with a large resolution I guess... but it's barely noticeable.

Image Is it more like a tearing effect?

Yes you could say that. If I turn very quickly the image doesn't pan smoothly, it sort of gets a little choppy. It's most noticeable when there are a lot of large objects in screen like space stations or planets. It isn't a very strong effect, sometimes I don't notice it if I'm focused on what's happening in game. I'm thinking that it could be something to do with the Graphic Card memory... although 1GB isn't bad maybe it's struggling with the 2560x1440 screen resolution?

 I suppose you've already tried cranking up your anti-aliasing to 4x or more.

Well, actually I don't know how to do that with this one. On my old laptop I remember the Nvidia control panel for those settings, but as far as I can see this AMD video card doesn't seem to have the same accessability options.

A little stuttering as soon as the game launches could happen as the scene is 'cached' into video memory. This could vary in effect depending on the performance of the system and its video card. Try turning around 360-degrees several times to see if things eventually smooth out.

Actually, I bet the choppiness is caused by Vsync being on and he should turn it off and live with a bit of tearing instead. You said "optimized" means vsync is on, I've seen that issue caused by vsync in many games and I more often force it off than leave it on for that reason.

Unless you have a 120hz monitor vsync will often cause poor frame rates in games because if it can't maintain 60hz in sync.

Well I think I found what seems to have been causing that "tearing" effect... I had been running the game with MaxiVista to use an extra display screen. When I ran the game without that (15 day free trial expired!) there was no more tearing effect. The "optimized" option was on... might just try it with Vsync off to see what happens.
