I can't get past the racing mission!

Post by XinCasa »

While playing as a Mercenary for over a week now, and docked at New Hope. I can't get past the required racing mission. I keep losing the race, and can't get other IMG missions to go further in the game. Why does the opponent flyer always pass me, after i target him, and even when I press "m" (match speed) while he's behind me. I'm getting frustrated.:(:(

Hi and welcome.

When I did it, I kept full speed in IDS mode (Not inertia) and used the afterburner in bursts when
it was straight. (You don't use match speed here))

With the new settings of IDSx5 settings (You set keys for it on page 3 in setup), set the IDSx3
and you don't even need the afterburner.

Hope this helps.

If not, join MP and we will help you improve your flying skills.;)

Best is IDSx2, on x3 you can go to fast and fly out of the tube in tight turns.
Since the AI cannot use IDS Multiplier you go twice as fast wich is more then enough.

Hello XinCasa, also, fly the race course as you would a car race track by staying to the inside of the curve and aim more towards it to slide through as you round them then power up but be ready for the next curve. It will still take a few tries as you test your skills and learn how your ship handles but then thats what the race is meant to teach. Good luck and hop on line after you pass this one as it is the only one I believe that you HAVE to do off-line. Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Have fun and hope to see you out there sometime.:)

No problem Aria.

Racing is pretty funny like that since the only way you can loose is if you are unable to stay in the tube.
Speed is no issue what so ever. :)

Official dedicated server called Remula 1 is very active If you join in right period of time. And it talks!

And there are good clans out there. And enemies waiting you to say proper hello. So much fun...

could u give me a rough estimate? chances of running into potential targets. if one were to prefer "the low road", would finding potential targets be annoyingly easy? fun and challenging? or reduced to that bad gameplay mechanic called "luck"?

There is plenty of AI targets and most Human players are friendly and will help you.

However, there are a few pilots that like to "welcome" new pilots with a kill or 2. (Not me)
If you prefer the "low road" with mining, exploring, trading there is lots to discover and
beside the "welcoming" you'll be left alone unless you want company for joint contracts.

You can connect and be a gunner if you like in some fighting contracts, lots of fun.;)

 Anyone patrolling for easy prey can use the tilde key to see which sectors are occupied and who is occupying them. But the prey can evade those on the prowl by moving away from obvious "hang-outs" ... trade stations or asteroid fields being the most obvious. It can be irritating to the prey ... always on the run when trying to do a bit of mining. But help is usually only a couple systems away. Use the chat box and give a shout-out when necessary.

hmm. so it turns into a battle of attrition between the ships fuel capacity or if the predator gets bored. is there any way to effectivly hide or escape?

:o You can't hide from the tilde key. But each sector is rather big ... big enough for one pilot to remain outside scanner range of another pilot. And, even if somebody blunders onto your location, you can use your jump drive to escape.

knowing ur targets jump drive level might help u to guess their jump location among random traffic then.... cool

 Even the worst jump drive can take you a full sector from your jump point. You can get that much info from the tilde.

Thanks crew!
I found after going into configurations, and setting the IDS speeds, the original AI setting x1 (624 mps @ 100% max) is to slow ensuring consistant losses. After a setting of x2 (873 mps @ 70% of 1248 mps max) i easily win!
Thanks for all of your help.

This must have been changed in recent versions, because at IDS x2 I was consistently falling-behind and losing the race.
What I had to do was switch to IDS x3 and set speed about 1340 mps (number 8 on keyboard). That kept me just barely ahead of the AI ship.
When racing I often "lead" my ship's nose towards the center of the turn, because you are always sliding a bit in space.
Warning: there is a very sharp turn at the end (last turn) that I almost slid-out of the ring, might want to drop speed a bit on that last one.

It also depend on what ship you have. If you are flying something with low Agility like a Mammoth or Starmaster or Leviathon it's extremely hard to stay in the tunnel and win the races or beat the Clock.
I use a Mammoth with the best Wing anf I simply gave up on races because I couldn't win or beat the clock.
Maybe there are some pilots much better than me that can do it with those frames - but I can't.
I was able to win some races with a Sentinel and good Wing and if your purpose is to do the IMG the use a high Agility ship and proceed. But the IMG wasn't my goal and I need the Mammoth to be able to configure the equipment, crew, and missile slots like I want - 8,4,8.

I should have clarified, I was using the same ship you start the game with.

There has been a change for the race some
months ago. One thing is that the "tube" is
much larger now. The race is great for
ship handling practice. Once you are a good
racing pilot you are well on your way on
combat as well.
