So I warp into a area and my science op says unknown container detected heading 302 pitch 3 so I get on exactly that course.

Now what I don't understand is how my science officer can't narrow it down little more right now feels like needle in haystack. Am I missing something or is this how its suppose to work?

I have yet to find anything that my science officer detected...feels like a time sink for lack of a better example.

Hi Aria.

Thats the way it works.

What you can do is take a note of what he says. Then jump out of the sector.
Jump in at another location and he'll give you new directions,

You now have 2 lines. You'll find it where they cross.

Good luck!;)
\"Nothing is impossible, it only takes a bit longer!\"
\"We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction!\"

Try jumping out of sector ,then back in ,makeing note of your sci op's directions.

Sometimes I will do this 3 or 4 times ,narrowing down the area to search. Also haveing a nav op at 100/100 will improve your chances .

Welcome , and mooo;)

I've never found a container from the science officers directions. It would be handy if he gave you the occasional update. Apparently, the way to do it, is to, jump out of the sector, taking note of the direction the SO told you the container was in. Then, jump back in, so that you get diff co-ords - that way you can triangulate.

In my opinion, the science op just takes up crew space and breaths valuable oxygen... just saying.;)

How to find floating containers in about ten minutes:
  • Install a compass marked off in ten-degree increments.
  • Install a pitch ladder marked off in one-degree increments.
  • Get a good science officer.
  • Jump into the sector.
  • Stop ... put your coordinates in the Nav Log.
  • Turn to the exact heading and pitch.
  • Engage inertial.
  • Hit afterburner and get up to about 1800kps.
  • Travel about so far.
  • Put your new coordinates into the Nav Log.
  • Jump out of the sector.
  • Jump back into the sector ... at the second set of logged coordinates.
  • Turn to your science officer's exact new heading and pitch.
  • Rinse and reapeat until you can see where your trail is taking you.
You can then either keep going or jump ahead to a point where your science officer is sending you back the way you came. By now, you should be looking closely for the purple blip on your radar.

Edit Note:
Using this technique, I've had only one problem. It was when the floating container wasn't floating ... it was under ground. I came at it from both directions and found a point (in space) where the container should've been. I then jumped out of the sector and back in ... at the point where I expected to find the container. It was then that my science officer sent me on a heading and pitch directly toward the planet. Sure enough, the purple blip finally appeared on radar ... beneath the surface.

Me neither... Never found anything. Spend hours and hours travelling around and nothing. gave up a long time ago.

I wonder why I keep him around too.

I've heard some pilots have found some really, really cool stuff. I just dont have the millenia to spend on what appears to be a fruitless attempt to find it. I think that is an area of the game which really needs improvement However, the whole open ended approach is what keeps me coming back nite after nite. Im hooked.

 The only thing that needs improvement is your search technique. And a couple modded HUD files.

Thank you Marvin for the tips, one thing the science op is not updating me at all when I leave the sector and jump back in?

:o That is more than a little odd. Every time you jump out of a sector and back in, you should get a heading and pitch from your science officer. If you jump into the same spot every time, it will be the same heading and pitch. Which is why you want to jump to the place where you stopped (and logged) prior to jumping back out.

Tried a few times jumping back in at different spots ..no update sadly.

Science op is at 100 skill and 74 loyalty so not sure what the issue is.

Also quick question I did a jump to Thuban was hoping to offload some plat and diamonds for a better price, and immediately got blown out of space.

I have not attacked anyone and have done only minor mission so far..am I missing something?

Sadly yes. Your reputation is not equal through space. In some systems the navy will love you, in other areas it will hate you. Same for all the different factions. In general Energy, navy and miners club together and guild and rebels club together.

In Thuban your reputation is fair, which is one up from hostile, and there are plenty of people that will blow a merc out of the sky just for breathing.

If you want to see lots of reds head for Sierra...

One of the reasons for doing missions is to alter the systems rep of you. one of the consequences of MP is that it has made space a little more dangerous for newbies, but that would not effect single player.

Well I got little overly excited when I seen plat was selling for double what I normally get and forgot all about the unknown containers in space. Oh and my science op left me had to pick another one up thats less skilled (74) soon as I repeat the problem I will let you know so we can go from there.

Not sure what I could be doing wrong as soon as I was told there was something in the sector I made note of the cords (compass and pitch) and jumped one sector over then back in at a different spot??

:o Yeah, you should've gotten a new heading from your science officer. But expect him to jump ship whenever his loyalty is below 100% unless you pay him 3 or 4 times what he's worth. (I always go on a really long trip after hiring a crew.) And MM's server is called Remula One ... or something like that.

Just a thought ... you are talking about containers, right? Not minerals in an asteroid field or anything of value that might be found on a planet? Because your science officer will mention any of those but only give directions to containers.

yes containers sorry I was not clear.

I just logged into the MP server appears my voice chat needs some tweaking as people could barely hear me, will log back soon as I fiddle with it.
