[release] "MiniG-HUD" and Modified Viper Cockpit

Post by haloterm »

Edit 2: Now downloads are available

Edit: See posts below for the current state of the modded Viper cockpit/HUD

Well, today I experimented a little bit with cockpit and HUD mods.

While I really love the work that warsign has done with his Viper cockpit, for my personal taste both the HUD and the interior lights are a little too colourful.

So I decided to desaturate the interior textures, and to replace the Viper HUD with the HUD used by Accountants Observation Cockpit (in its EM version).

And this is the result:

First a picture with HUD switched off, to present the interior:

And now with HUD switched on:

Now everything is more clean for my eyes. :)

Thanks. But changing that was not that much work -- and I also want to emphasize that I really like warsign's cockpit model.

However, I'm still not really content with using the Accountant mod inside a Viper. Something more realistic might please me more, so currently I'm creating an extremly minimalistic HUD as found in today's aircraft. Simple bright-green rectangles and characters. I'll also try to change the font to the same font ... I'll post a screenshot later.

Ok, this is the current state:

Image

As you can see, the whole upper console, except the compass, is gone, because it was way too distracting. Of course, the buttons are still there, so if I want to use them, I can.

I also replaced the background of the left MFD with simple green labels (but I think I'll make them slightly larger).

Warsign's mod includes several custom warning icons (such as incoming missile etc.) These were also replaced with simple orange and red text boxes.

I used "setfont.txt" to change the font to Segoe UI, size 26, bold. This looks better than using Arial (which I use for the HUD graphics), but esp. in the various consoles, it is very small. Also, the text wrap is far to early. So I still might to fiddle around with this.

Some other screenshots:

Finally, I'd like to know if it's possible to change the color of the remaining blue HUD parts? If I remember correctly, I did this once in EL, but I've forgotten how to do this. Might have a look in the customization kit.

 Looks really good. My only comment it that you might want to get rid of any remaining non-functional gauges.

Marvin, do you speak, for example, of the just-decorative F16 console in the middle of the EvoViper cockpit? Perhaps it could be replaced with some other information.

We're nearly done. Most markers are properly replaced and work well.

I decided to switch back to the EM default font, and perhaps I will also decide to stick with the original EvoViper left MFD design. I will also stick with the default IDS and racing markers. Oh, and I re-activated the front glass effect (which was deactivated in EvoViper), because a cockpit without glass looks strange.

Modified Viper 1.0

The modified Viper Cockpit is now finished. It includes both changes to warsign's EvoViper cockipit, as well a completly new HUD.

The goal was to reduce visual overload by reducing colours, removing the console on top of the screen and by providing a clean, unified HUD appearence without any fancy rainbow gradients ;) and overcomplex markers.

This is the final result:

Image

Here, on this view with one of the HUD modes, you can see that I "switched off" the middle console, i.e no fake gauges are shown on it anymore.

Image

On this view, the HUD is fully activated and the default front glass texture of EM is visible. Warsign did a good job in making the cockpit frame fitting to this glass effect.

Image

Here again everything is switched off. A beautiful and peaceful view.

If you're interested in using the modified Viper or the HUD, let me know.

 Really looks good. And, yes, I was talkling about the center console. Btw, you might want to extend your graphic talents to the compass and use/make one with ten-degree increments (as opposed to 15 degrees) for more accurate navigation ... especially when hunting hidden containers.

This is great! I can't wait to use it in-game. Its nice to have some variety of cockpits to choose from. This as well as Warsign's Viper is what inspired me to create my own mod.

This IS warsign's cockpit mod, after all.

Deleting and desaturating textures is not difficult, and drawing green rectangles and circles for the HUD is easy, too. So it's really just as if I downloaded a already-great photo from, say, deviantART, changed the colours a little bit. If I would upload such a photo back to deviantART as own work, they wouldn't appreciate it, because there is no creativity in it. That's why I am hesitating so much in uploading this to Dropbox.

Draco's mod of the viper cockpit is better, in this sense, because he has done more substantial work on it.

Okay, here are the downloads for both the cockpit and the "minimalistic green HUD" (or MiniG-HUD :D ):

- All-in-One-Package (includes Modified Viper Cockpit and Minimalistic Green HUD)
- MiniG-HUD only (includes only the "minimalistic green HUD", but not the Viper cockpit)

Have fun -- and if anything does not work, please leave a note. I will take care of it asap.
