Strange problem: Evochron doesn't start after re-install *FIXED*

Post by haloterm »

Hello,

after months of not playing Evochron Mercenary, I installed Evochron two days ago in the current version on my new computer.

When I started Evochron two days ago, I activated the game successfully and could play as I was used to.

Yesterday (and today) I wanted to play again -- but the game does not start.

In Windows task manager, I see the Evochron process appearing for some seconds and disappearing afterwards.

I uninstalled and re-installed again (2 times), but to no avail.

I installed Evochron in the default location (c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary) and have no mods installed.

My computer:

-- Intel Core i5
-- Windows 7 64-bit
-- 4 GB RAM
-- NVIDIA GT 530 with 2 GB video RAM (driver version: 306.23)

On the first day, the game went extremly well and fast with this setup.

What could be the problem?

Also, try deleting the sw.cfg file in the save data folder, default location is c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary, then launch the game to allow it to rebuild the file.

Directly after reinstalling and trying to start, there is neither a save data folder nor a sw.cfg in the EM folder.

Sounds like the game isn't even getting far enough along to create them. Have you given the game sufficient permission with any security programs you have on your system? If you'd like me to look into your setup, follow the steps here: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#8

The solution to this problem turned out to be related to a wireless mouse with a low/dead battery. It affected other games (Oblivion and X3) and the Windows error log contained the same failing module for all of them, the Windows HID.DLL file. Once a different mouse was plugged in to test with, the games were able to launch and run as normal.
