So, me and my buddy tried playing Mercenary together last night, we aced combat missions like nobody's business, but then: IMG quest to destroy a destroyer with a fleet of varying size.
We couldn't figure out how to drop the destroyer, every time we got it's shields even down to red, we had to fall back a bit to avoid the infinitely replenishing flock of fighters. And when we got back to the destroyer it had regenerated it's shields.
Basically we did fly-by's and focused our efforts on one part of the shields, usually the rear one.
What gives, are we missing something obvious here?
We're armed with Maxim-R and Phantom particle guns & class 5 beams.
Any and all tips are more than welcome
EDIT:
as per usual, I can't make a post without editing.
I started to wonder if we should try driving energy from shields to weapons and then try the same fly-by tactics..

You shooting the cap ship with simultaneous laser and cannon? If so, use lasers on the shields first then cannon when shields are at red level, if you have missiles, use those too and for a faster kill use fulcrum torpedoes. Remember you consume energy faster with cannon/laser. If you have the credits, also buy at cannon relay system and heatsink, it makes a huge difference.

We did use beams for the shields, ofc. Didn't mention that in first post, so: d'oh.From post: 113498, Topic: tid=7918, author=sundalo wrote:You shooting the cap ship with simultaneous laser and cannon? We have relays but haven't seen heatsinks anywhere yet, any idea where we could aquire those?
Also: aren't fulcrum missiles ridiculously expensive?

I think that you can find the equipment in Pearl or Arvoch WZ.From post: 113499, Topic: tid=7918, author=Malix wrote:We did use beams for the shields, ofc. Maybe Lost Rucker to.
Take out the escort first, then
try to strafe back and forth behind the ship and target it's engines.
I take it out with a Icespear/Fusion only.
Good luck.

Yes, they are and it's a bit "overkill" imho. Think lasers by themselves don't do much damage, but lasers & guns are better untill you see the shields turn red, then switch to just guns.
One common technigue is to make high speed passes with IDS off [or is it on] and start blasting as you pass by rotating your ship. Then turn around and do it again. It won't take long and there is a beautiful rewarding explosion!
Good luck.

try targeting the cap ships weapons by pressing "U" twice then attack from front.
works for me every time.

"If you choose to strafe the Capital Ships (my favorite) and are having problems with the smaller Hostiles you can try two different techniques"
1. Lead the smaller Hostiles away and then destroy them first then head back to the Cap ship and target there engines, use the 'U' key.
2. Start your strafing run and have the smaller Hostile ships chase you...Then when you reach the end of the cap ship turn and go down the other side thus keeping the Capital Ship between you and the smaller hostiles...round and round you go and no little Hostile to mess up your day.
There are a Lot of good advice here...choose the one that fit's your style of fighting and practice does make you perfect.

Target it's weapon system, bring it's weapon system down to at least 15, then fire away with out it firing back, best to engage any other fighters along side of it first, but you can make the fighters accidentally attack the ship.
