I suspect "Vonari - C" or something like that, whoever he/she was. I managed to beat him/her a couple of times, but his/her expertise at ship-building is impressive.
Dingo knows who I'm talking about.

The best I ever fought was Miaz. The [TER] are a bunch of good fighters, usually.

Extremely misleading question actually. Best can mean many things. Of the many pilots that I have fought against, SeeJay, Rush, Miaz, Darkhorse, [TER] Shia, and recently Mecingo, have stood out. This omits a few who have left the game or can't be mentioned. And omits those with good reputations that I simply haven't ever fought.

But there are many variables.

Consistency is one. Some players are awesome one day, mediocre (or drunk) the next.

Distractions another. For example, Marvin is not very war-like, but has great situational awareness. I remember he killed me in an asteroid infested nebula once upon a time. Then there is the question of whether someone said "ready, set, go" and the players both has time to prepare, or if it was a more organic situation.

Some pilots are better when they think of a combat as "real" as opposed to "practice." Some make no distinction.

Then there are tactics. Gorf and one retired pilot were both great at using combat-jump techniques. Some are good at baiting an opponent into making an aggressive mistake (my favorite). Some are bad at escaping or closing in for the kill, but otherwise great fighters.

I won't even get into how one builds a ship or energy management.

Then there is best combat pilot against ai, and that's a large field to choose from. Avenger, Busch, a bunch of other people enter the picture here.

In closing, let's have a tournament already

I totally agree with Dingo here since there is many variables.

To mention a few great pilots:
Fighting Dingo, Mecingo, Rush, Powell, Gorf, Galaxian, Dave S and Miaz is always a challange.

Bossk and Dengar are also a great challenge and they work great as a team.

With Avenger, Marvin, Atollski, Sinbad, HB clan members, Shieldwolf and all of the above
as wingmans makes combat a walk in the park. Excellent pilots.

I have probably missed a few but those are the ones I normally encounter.

One retired pilot from human side...

Terasin fighters especially Jongte from allien side...

Also Shewter, Verbosity, Bravehart, Gorf, Wasp are very tough fighters.

With all due respect to everyone who plays this great game and to those who should play this game (as a former Evochron Legend with over 30,000 kills), I believe I am the best pilot ever. The only way to kill me is with a fulcrum torpedo.

It doesn't matter how many AI kills you have.
Just about any human pilot is better then the AI ships.

Kills in PvP is the only measurement in combat skill imho!

Trust me I have killed many a human especially in the Legend days of Evochron. I was at war with my old squad (SD) for months and formed my own squad IA. This game is almost identical but is superior in graphics and effects. The tweaks and enhancements in Mercenary make PvP much more fun. Not to mention better ship choices.

There is no need for that. I will grant you right here that you are the 'better' pilot. I have never been a good PvP fighter in other games (Freelancer), and have not even made an attempt in EM. It is one of the last things on my 'still to do'-list if it's on there in the first place.
Respectfully, to be quite honest I couldn't care less about who is the better and the lesser fighter. I play the game to relax, explore all the beautiful things it has, build my personal fortune and for the fun I have in doing all that. By myself or together with other players if the occasion arises.

I am pretty sure though, that someone else would gladly take you up on your offer.
