The new questtext.dat file can't alter your profile except that, if you advance in one questtext and then save, your progress is then saved for that profile ... for any and all quests (or anything else that uses the questtext file).

About the linking of a program ... what I want to do is delete any linking at all. I could do that with XP (it has a delete button as one of the options: Control Panel -> Folder Options -> File Types ... highlight the file extension and click on Delete). No such luck with 7.

 Vice is modifying the game for the next release so that an encrypted questtext.txt file can be used ... without worrying about moving the original questtext.dat file. It means the rally will need to be delayed a week or two more ... but it should help head off the expected Murphy's Law for some participants. Otherwise, I'd need to use a data file for each route and some players might end up deleting their IMG quest.

Does this mean that we won't need to start a new quest-free profile? :)

:o No, no. It just means that the Rally "quest" won't bork your default IMG quest ... 'cause it's going to be a compiled text file (while your IMG quest is a data file). But the sequence numbers are still the same and the game still sees them as a quest. Ergo, to start at "step" 1 (where the rally begins) you'll still need that new profile.

;) On the bright side, you now have longer to get your new pilot profile outfitted and pre-positioned for the rally.

:( + :) = :D

EDIT: bought a new frame in a new profile from my clan earnings - now to kit it out! :)

Thanks you Dingo for coming to meet me in Sapphire - I'd forgotten how slow a C1 Jump Drive is :P

I'll get a clone of my chimera in Sapphire this evening so I'll be ready to roll when the time comes.
Best regards

 Make sure it's a Chimera profile we haven't used to do any quest contracts.

 Vice released an update to the game here (version 1.524), near the bottom of the topic (not the first post):

http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7951

This version is needed for anyone contemplating the Road Rally in Space. (Don't worry, it won't bork your current game.)

 IIRC, this download is a compiled test file and should work if you have the new version of the game:

From post: 114387, Topic: tid=7840, author=Marvin wrote::cool: IIRC, this download is a compiled test file and should work if you have the new version of the game:
Strange but the downloaded file has a reported size of 0B, but contains 2896 characters in 27 lines

I report this so that people who download the file to test don't think that there is a problem :)

Sorry to be thick, but does the file have to be renamed to just questtext.txt?

I still don't get if with the last game update I can use a profile already "quested" or not.

Working a profile from zero to Chimera is undoable for me...-.-

 I just downloaded the test file and it shows to be 2,896 bytes (it's that small) in Properties. And the "c" is necessary ... it's the reason you can place the file in your main game folder without it deleting your default quest. The "c" stands for "compiled" and is the only way the game recognizes a text file as being compiled. Else, you could open the file and get the answers to all the questions ... without doing the rally.

;) Denny, you don't need a Chimera. I ran all five routes with nothing but a class 2 ship and a class 5 Fulcrum drive. It's a rally ... a race. You don't do any contracts. You don't fight any enemies. You just go where you're told to go and note the answers to the questions as they are given you.

Any update on the dates?

Could you please summarise the order of actions approaching the day?

when can we download the files?

What time (given that we are scattered around the world) will the earliest start be allowed?

Sorry to be a pest but there have been so many posts and changes and developments I don't want to find out that I've missed it by a day!! :)

This post was made at 10:10pm local time in the UK EDIT: as a complication because of British Summer Time, the time given at the top of the post is one hour earlier (ie GMT) (I think! )

 I'm waiting for SeeJay to get back from Italy and send me an email. The rally will most likely be the Sunday after he gets back. The questions for the rally will be posted here, in the first post, at least 24 hours in advance ... probably closer to 48 hours. The rally files will be given to SeeJay and he will post them at his website ... then lock access to the download until rally time. The rally will probably begin around noon Pacific Time ... since that's when the R1 server is usually the most crowded. At rally time, I'll post the password in the first post of this topic. Then it's up to the players to download and install the file, log on to the R1 server, and begin the rally.

 Okay, SeeJay is back from Italy and I've coordinated with him on the Road Rally. I've also coordinated with MMaggio for the "use" of his server/chat log and Vice for sponsorship. Ergo, I've set a tentative date for the Rally being a week from this coming Sunday. That would be the 25th of September, Sunday ... at 12 noon Pacific Time. Which should be 8:00 pm Greenwich (GMT/Zulu) time.
