I'm probably miles behind everyone else here, but I had 40+ profiles with the same name plus one that had glitched and wouldn't load or delete. delteing and renaming in the game is a bit laborious since you can only do it for one profile at a time and can end up with lots of blanks
After a bit of playing about I found that you can renumber the profiles and delete them in the game folder, making it easier to sort a lot of profiles out quite quickly. I deleted the ones I wanted rid of and then used a mass renamer to renumber the others sequentially. I then renamed them in the game to the system they are in. I can now go and play in Sol (why can Earth Defence Forces see my stealthed ship? ), go back and explore the wreck in XXXXXX at my leisure, practice some (IMG) contracts i@ve lready completed (but by the skin of my teeth) without having to wait for them to appear in the normal contract lists and so on.
