Evocron Crash at start up (win7 64bit)
Hey I'm having a similar problem. Evochron Mercenary won't start. Evochron Legends ran fine, but Mercenary is having an issue. It was working a few months ago, and I went to try and play it today and it comes back with this error.
EvochronMercenary.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click
OK to close the application.
I've tried uninstalling it and video drivers and rebooted and scanned my memory. Ran registry fixes and everything. Still nothing.

My e-mail reply offered some suggestions. As another step, you can also try to install the redistributable package for Visual C++ here:

I have Windows 7 64 bit Professional and Mercenary runs much better on it than on Windows XP 32 bit. I have dual boot with Windows XP 32bit and Windows 7 64 bit Pro.....

My son got it to run on Windows 7 ... but I'm not about to go back to college just to use an OS I don't need.

It didn't work. So I gave the computer to my son. He calls the next day and says the game runs fine.

This! Yes I recently reinstalled AVG and Avast so perhaps that was it also. I turned off uac and I can always remove Avast for testing purposes as well. I've been trying everything that Vice suggested in his email and I'm running a SFC scan as I type. I'll keep you guys informed and let ya know when I get it working. From post: 100072, Topic: tid=7168, author=GORF wrote:From post: 100048, Topic: tid=4087, author=OrgyMeyer wrote:Hey I'm having a similar problem. Got it working, at least I think I do, going to go test it out right away, but it got to the loading screen without error which is progress at least!
Going to go try it out now, but it was either sfc.exe /scannow, turning off UAC or uninstalling AVAST. Also might have been the C++ redistributable as well. I rebooted after all that and it just worked!
I'm downloading Avast right now so we'll see if reinstalling that has any issues or not. I can always use AVG instead...
See you guys out there and thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Not sure which one worked but the shotgun approach

Ok so I installed AVAST again and it caused the error. I think we've figured this one out. I'll try out AVG and see how that works.

Evocron Crash at start up (win7 64bit)
Looks like the problem started when Avast updated their program recently. Older installations were not effected, but fresh installs with the latest program version could introduce the 0xC0000005 error. The problem effected more than just this game, causing a number of programs to not be able to launch. Avast has apparently fixed the problem and has made a revised version available:
http://forum.avast.com/http://www.starw ... ic.php?t=5
It seems there may still be some lingering problems with the latest program verion(s) of Avast and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 based on the discussions taking place in their forum. Downgrading to program version 5.0.667 seems to fix most of the reported problems. If you encounter any further problems with their software, you can contact them via that forum or through their contact page.

Evocron Crash at start up (win7 64bit)
I have Avast 5.0.677 on my XP and my Win7 Pro @ 64 Bit with no problems (knock on wooden head) so far. I will remember to NOT update those for now. I did download the new 5.1.889 just now but will save it.

Just confirmed that the new Avast program update effects 32-bit versions of Windows 7 as well, not just 64-bit. All kinds of programs stop working.

Seems the update is also totally crashing/crippling Windows XP systems as well. It's bad enough that 0xc0000005 errors would occur with various programs, but interfering with bootup is pretty serious. I highly recommend anyone encountering problems with Avast report those problems to them in their forum or via their e-mail support.

On XP, it sometimes seems to work fine for a while, then a reboot later encounters the problems. With Windows 7, the problems often occur immediately after the update when trying to launch programs (web browser, e-mail, games, etc). Some systems encounter no problems, some encounter them. Doesn't seem to be a firm way yet to determine how a system will respond short of completing the update and testing it.

Update, My xp32 machine is still working well w/newest version and updates.
On my win7 machine I decided to run win security ,so far so good ,I had noticed that avast no longer covered real time web protection on their free version ,so Instead of running 2 av,s I opted to try the win av software

Did they remove/disable the web shield in 5.1.889? I wasn't aware that they had changed that at all. That would be a pretty big negative change.
