Update from NVIDIA Customer Care

Post by Theta »

Hi there- Firstly, I want to say I got this game 2 days ago and, wow, this is one of the best space fighter games I've ever played.

Now, I'm having one issue with it. I looked forever for this and I couldn't find it anywhere. When I first started playing, I was confused because the jump gates looked "closed" to me. I had played the demo for legends before hand so I knew what they were supposed to look like but now instead of a jump gate with a big, blue, glowing circle, now it was a jump gate with a pitch black circle in the middle. I wasn't thinking much of it until I came across my first worm hole which, just as well, was an ominous looking black void. I was thinking maybe it was supposed to look like that, simulating a black hole or something, but the thing was just so hard to see I knew it was probably suffering the same fate as the jump gates.

So I went immediately to the one option I thought might be affecting it- Shader detail. I set that from high to off and everything looked fine- That is, nothing on the game was displaying incorrectly, but now I don't have any shaders and I'm rather disappointed. I tried setting the shader level to low, but it still gives me the same issue. For now, I guess I'll play with shaders turned off but it's really a bummer considering all the neat little eye candy I'm missing out on without shaders. Pics below:

I don't know what system information you might need so here's a little bit of information about my machine:
Alienware Aurora-
i7 Quad Core Processor @ 2.80 GHz
6.00 GB ram
64-Bit Windows 7 Home
GeForce GTX 480 [1.5 Gig Mem, 384 bit]

If you need me to post any more information about the issue or anything, I can. I'd like to try to get this fixed so I can turn my shaders back on.

Yep, definately shouldn't look like that. Have you tried reinstalling the game?

Maybe you have changed some global settings in the nVidia control panel? Maybe worth taking a look if a reinstall doesn't work. What drivers are you running?

Can't really think of what it could be, but i'm sure Vice or someone will be along to help you soon.

I haven't tried completely reinstalling the game yet. I suppose I should have... I have the Impulse version of the game. I'm going to reinstall the game with the one from the website and re-register and let you know what happens.
As for the nVidia control panel, I did look in to that. I set everything to let the application choose and it didn't change anything. I also see if maybe there's an updated version of the drivers- Maybe that can fix it.

Alright I just got back from completely reinstalling EM- Unfortunately I didn't back up my save correctly... Whoops...
I also update to the latest nVidia drivers and restarted my computer.

Unfortunately my game is still doing it.

Could it be something as simple as color adjustment ?

It won't be colour ajustment because the guide line dots to the gate look fine, although in that pic there only seems to be one row? Maybe it's just a strange angle.

Have you got the latest test build, though i'm not sure if that could help, haven't seen this problem before.

Well, the test build was worth a try, but it didn't fix the issue.
The one row of lights is a bad angle. There's actually two rows.
Everything else in the game looks exactly as it should. It's just that one effect and only with shaders turned on.

Possibly a driver issue. Please post which driver versions you are trying.

Currently, I'm running nVidia drivers, GeForce/ION Release 260.99. Before I updated, I was running 258.96 from July, which also had the issue.

I may report that to Nvidia as a bug then. Seems they've been having problems with some of their recent driver releases and the 4XX line of video cards (on certain system configurations perhaps?) in various games. Perhaps this is related. Nothing wierd about that shader, it's actually a pretty basic effect.

Alright then. Well, thanks for looking in to it. I'll just wait until nVidia releases an appropriate driver set.

Updat from NVIDIA Customer Care
Hi Michael,

Thank you for the update.

Since you are facing this issue only with this game. This does not look to be a driver or the Graphic card specific issue. I request you to get in touch with the game developer and check if there are any update that can be installed to fix this issue. Update me on the status of the issue after trying the same.

I will look forward to your reply to assist you better.

Best Regards,

NVIDIA Customer Care

Looks like a classic case of "shove the problem the other way so that I don't have to deal with it" customer care move.

yep, funny how the game was ok with my old gt 9500 ? I will ask them why all other cards work with this game no problem and only an issue with the gts 450.

I wonder if the original poster here Theta got it sorted?

Thanks

The only way to fix it is to install an older Nvidia driver.

This is a clear indication that the problem has to be resolved by Nvidia.
I have the same problem btw, but I am not going to install an older driver so I just look at the black gates and think, cool color.

You'd probably have to go pretty far back to a driver that works, something in the 19X.XX range (spring of last year). It seems the problem came about with the introduction of the '256' series of drivers and even then, the problem only occured with the newer line of 4XX series of video cards. Problems also weren't just limited to this game or one particular new driver either. The recent pattern of problems with their drivers (ie micro-stuttering, delayed fixes, introduced functionality problems, rendering flaws, stability issues, etc) has caused me to start considering ATI for my next video card upgrade.
