The \"dumb mistake\" thread

Post by Trent »

OK.. I'll start it off. I'm new to the game and didn't really have an appreciation for how BIG things are out there. I noticed that each jump only consumes a little fuel, so I took my startup POS ship for a joy ride. Pointed it approximately where the next "sector" should be (was wanting to go from Lambda to something-rather), and started jumping.

A half hour later, after a few dozen (hundred?) jumps, I noticed I wasn't anywhere CLOSE to being there, and I didn't have enough fuel left to get back.

Whoops. Another corpse drifting through space.

It is advisable to get the best jump drive and a deploy constructor to remove fuel limits before heading off into the black. The deploy constructor is new in Mercenary, in Legends it was always a bit nerve racking because you had to save enough fuel to get back. Each sector takes 1 fuel during a jump, so if you want to cross 1000 sectors you need at least 1000 fuel or a deploy constructor.

The first dumb mistake I will post about is similar. I was exploring on autopilot and ran out of fuel. I had a deploy constructor, but no way to lose my post jump velocity so I could use it.

"LOL....Yeah that has happened to a Few good pilots around here...I've rescued a few in my time":D:D:D if you find yourself in that position you can do several things...1 press the F7 key for self destruct and start over or 2. post for a rescue here in the forum or 3. Go online in MP and give someone your nav coordination...calling MayDay in text will help get someones attention. #3 is your best bet for Quick response...and it's easy to transfer fuel pods...;)

Upon accepting a mission, the relevant mission waypoint becomes active. F2 to jump, and you're there. This is convenient except for missions that take you to a planet to mine oxygen or water.

I had a marathon of dumb mistakes a few days ago.

So I decided to take on a Vonari fleet battle contract, alone. The moment I took the contract I hit my jump button without adjusting the coordinates. Oops. I ended up right next to the Vonari capital ship, getting pummeled by flak cannons and laser fire, with Interceptors and Bombers closing in from all directions (my bad luck that day had given the Vonari a full fleet's worth of fighters, at least 14) and no CMs (forgot to reload at the station). Missiles started coming at me, with the ship also launching a full salvo. I panicked and hit the jump button to escape. I was still facing the cap ship (and its missiles) and ended up ramming into the entire missile barrage. My poor ship was quite crippled, with shields down, and both engines and nav systems disabled. Not only that, but I had once again forgotten to alter my coords, resulting in me arriving right back at the freaking cap ship. Needless to say, the Vonari greeted me with their customary greeting of missiles with a side dish of laser.

My reaction when I realized what had happened: "OH FFFFFUUUUUUU-"*BOOM*

When I accepted a military mission I don't dear to jump out of a battleship directly anymore... because if you accidently crash into the hangar wall while jumping (which happened really often to me last time ^^)... well then 'sayonara, good ol' ship!' :D

I recently exited and saved with 0 units of fuel in dangerous Pearl. When I started the game again I was totally stranded and had to call for help whilst being attacked by reds.

I always jump directly to the waypoint, never been a problem for me.

I have crashed into hanger walls a few times but I learned to face the exit pretty quickly. Can't remember the last time that happened to me.

Ok time for another stupid thing. I was doing a bunch of military contracts and thought I was doing search and destroy when I was supposed to be spying. I killed all the escorts and wondered why the contract hadn't completed. Then I happened to get in range of the cap ship and I started scanning it. Big face palm on that one. I tried to scan the ship but it got blown up before I could finish. So I self destructed and tried another contract.

 I still manage to press the space bar when wanting to press the "c" key ... due to a lack of coordination between finger and thumb on the left hand. Net result is, instead of puking out CMs as I attack a hostile capital ship, I come to a dead stop right next to it. For a very short time.

I swapped my countermeasure and inertial keys for better access to countermeasures. For a while I kept releasing countermeasures accidentally until my muscle memory adapted.

A dumb thing I used to do quite often was swap my view in battle when I meant to drop a countermeasure. Made it very hairy while I tried to evade the enemy and their missiles while trying to get back to the normal view.

Heh, I just did a very similar idiot-move. Mission to clean solar panel. Cleaned it, got the contract completed message. Open Nav panel, right click on station coords, hit "Jump." Straight into the solar panel. LOL.

Hitting the wrong button is annoying, yes. F4 is not very useful when trying to get away from enemies. I also still occasionally forget to turn around to jump out of a space station from a jump in, driving me into the center pylon. Fortunately, I just slide around it, but it is not so friendly in a constructor station or carrier....

I seem to have a thing for meaning to refuel to reload countermeasures on my next visit to a station, but forgetting and jumping into battle with few or none. The worst way to realize it is repeatedly hitting C thinking that it will deal with those incoming missiles. It is only slightly less bothersome to turn on the wave drive to get to the waypoint and immediately realize that you forgot it, though.

I never usually bother to face away from the central plyon of a space station when jumping. Has no appreciable impact and once or twice I have managed to hit it just right and complete the entire jump initiation animation with the pylon in front of me.

Time for another dumb thing. This one is from back in the day (of Legends). I jumped through a black hole with no repair system or engineer and no tractor beam. I made it through but was then stuck a really long way from home with no way of getting back and a sliver of hull health.

How about this one: Doing a co-op military mission with an allied clan the other clan pilot showed red in my HUD and I mistook him for Vonari... first dumb action. So I tried to activate the clan link to make him green in my HUD... I approached close within about 200 metres, targetted him, then pressed what I thought was the clan link but in fact was the missile launch! So I unwittingly let off all my excals in his face (after trying to shoot him down thinking he was a Vonari)!! I was amazed that I didn't start a clan war!

LoL, lost in andromeda with a nearly totalled ship, & no tractor beam to use the arvoch conflict device to get back!!

Now that is one unfortunate situation!

Been there, done that. Fortunately I've only been idiotic enough to do it once.

Probably my all time most unfortunate mistake:

Shortly after I started playing Renegades, I was near Vonarion, flying backwards and shooting down Vonari missiles that had locked on to me. I was firing lasers only, so I tried to press the "n" key to switch to cannons (because lasers do not affect missiles). Instead, I hit the "j" key, jettisoning my cargo bays directly behind my craft. In Renegades, you don't float nicely around jettisoned cargo but instead you ram into it and it will bring you to a stop. Of course, the missiles didn't stop...

To add insult to injury, the game saves when you jettison your cargo--and my cargo bays were full of expensive equipment... and they don't respawn when you do.
