Anyone using a gaming chair?

Post by MMaggio »

I bolted two 50 watt "Bass shakers" to my chair. One under the seat and the other to the back.
I then tied them in to my A/V reciever and use the FX to drive them.
When you kick in the afterburner, it will shake yourself silly!:cool:
Same with explosions or anything with a lot of bass. Volume controls on the amplifier allow for adjustment
It definately adds a new "tactile" dimemnsion to the game!

 MM, you need to always log into your server (sitting in that chair) ... that way, we can wake you up any time we want to chat ... just by launching a volley of Excals at your ship to get that chair vibrating.

Yes, but you guys aren't thinking big enough.

He's got a whole website dedicated to showing how to build it. I'd love to have one of these with EL.
I've already seen that and realized that it's impractical to achieve the three 360 degree axes needed for full motion simulation in Evochron. :P
I haven't figured out a practical, not to mention safe, means of making a motion sim that can handle putting the player hanging upside down.
It doesn't simulate the motion, it simulates the g-force. We'd all love 360 degrees of movement but it's mega expensive. Most real flight simulators don't even do that.

Believe me, you guys most always wake me up whden you join!
Vice added an "alarm" program that signals me whenever a player joins the game.
Those of you who keep self-destructing or keep trying to jump thru wormholes can give me quite an earful and keep me awake all night!
When that happens, I just turn the volume down.;)

So...is anyone using a bass transducer in their chair? I just got a steal of a deal...both amp and transducer for $40...now I will have to rewire my speakers along with re-designing my cockpit controls....I hope it will really add to the emersion factor.

Seven posts up I just said that I do. And yes, it works great if you know how to hook it up right.

Wow...I totally blew past that MMaggio. I am only getting one 50w bass shaker and I'll split the pre-amp subwoofer out and take one leg to the amp/shaker and leave the other one to my subwoofer. I have a bucket seat with a solid plastic backing and I was going to mount the shaker to the lower bottem of the back...since the seat is already somewhat isolated from my cockpit frame(I have nagahide upholstry sandwiched between the chair/frame). I am wondering if the position I plan is best..perhaps you can chime in on which one of yours gives the best impact?

To find the best position takes two people and "white noise".
Most amps today will produce white noise. Barring that, just about any music with a lot of bass will do.
You should hook up the shaker, sit in the chair and have the second person move it around till you feel it gives the most "feeling".
Usually, it's about even with the small of your back.
Good Luck

Got my shaker/amp installed today. Gives nice tactile feed back. It really adds to Mechwarrior..every time my mech takes a step it rumbles my seat...(double thumbs up)

Also, got about 50% of my cockpit control panels reworked...including re-mounting my keyboard, mounting the Thrustmaster cougars, and wiring custom toggle for panel backlights and a custom volume knob. If I can keep up this pace tomorrow or sunday I will have some sweet pics...:)

Playing Mechwarrior 4 vengence & Mercs....

My nearist neighbor's house is about 100ft away or so. Plus my cockpit is almost completely enclosed, will be once it's finished. As long as I don't turn up the volume to high at night...

I'll have to hunt around for them, but I once built a series of mechs based on starwraith for the board game ( Battletech ), rather than carrying ER ppc's they favored ultra AC20's

(sigh) no pics yet....I got my main center display tinted and mounted...but am unhappy with the top(dash)....the paint didn't come out as glossy as I want. So I am going to uphoster it in black Naughahide to simulate leather. I had to stop and play some Mechwarrior...I still love the bass shaker affect that game has. Also, I watched some of True Lies and it does make movie action a little more intense....I might have to get another one for my sofa in the movie room.

Arrgghh....stupid bills are getting in the way of my cockpit completion. I basically have everything functional, but I still need to complete my backlit displays, trimwork, and then enclosure. I may post some ugly pics this weekend along with doing MFD artwork ups for Evochron and Mechwarrior. I am really enjoying the bass shakers..those are almost as imersive as Force Feedback controls(still on my wishlist).

On the subject of gaming chairs, I use one of these:

http://yhst-88943691300264.stores.yahoo ... -arms.html

It's a bit lower to the ground than a typical chair, but works just about perfectly with my setup. It's also the perfect height to use the subwoofer cabinet of my Logitech Z-2300 system as a base for my throttle.

I plan to add a Buttkicker Gamer to it, but I'm waiting on a backorder through Amazon.

Edit:

Here's a picture of the above chair with my current setup:
