The Stiletto

Post by Nigel_Strange »

Strange Industries presents the latest in stealth technology: the Stiletto recon fighter.

With or without a cloaking device, this ship is one of the hardest craft to see. I've been flying one for a few days now, and I'm not still not entirely sure what it looks like.

By a stroke of enormous luck an image was captured against a bright planet (these things are nigh invisible in space):

Image

Features:
1. All straight lines, meaning low radar visibility and reflection angle.
2. Slim profile.
3. Starfield camouflage. Against a starry background, it's almost like a cloaking device.

You can get one here:

http://www.filefront.com/15083771/stilletto.zip

Unzip the file into your ships directory. It replaces the Ferret.

:P ['chuckle'] Btw, does it come with its own cockpit?

Sorry, I haven't done a cockpit yet. I would like to do a cockpit, but I don't know how different it is from doing a ship external.

I would like to do a ship for the Predator. I have some ideas that I need to work with. It needs to be bulky and imposing, but somehow more aerodynamic than the current one. Maybe I'll do some kind of flying-wing-esque design for it.

I haven't had much luck with the texture UV mapping. I guess I would need to somehow paint on the target itself, or at least paint reference points so that I could edit the texture better. I chose the starfield because I thought it would be the most stealthy, and also because my earlier attempts didn't quite look right ;)

Very nice Nigel! Is there any way to use it as the Evoch?

Just had a thought:

Unless you actually activate a stealth device, won't it still show up on radar and as a target in other players' HUDs? If so then the camouflage paintwork doesn't really make any difference because other players can still target you.

I have one problem with your model Nigel. Engine looks bigger and disturbing your ship's appearance. Scale your ship as little bigger, would be look way better.

Good ship, thanks again!

Disclaimer: the stealth features of the ship are largely imaginary. In MP, nobody else can see your personal ship models. In SP, the computer knows where you are, regardless of how stealthy your ship looks.

As for the ship engine issue, I don't know what to do about that. If it doesn't look like the one in the picture, then it has mysteriously changed from my computer to yours. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you want to use this model for a different ship, you can rename the files:

Ferret = frame20.x
Aries = frame21.x
Wraith = frame22.x
Evoch-C = frame23.x
Predator = frame 24.x

frameX.jpg = for the base frame texture (components will still use the default texture)

framecomponentX.jpg = for the component texture (optional, if none is specified, then the default texture will be used)

Also, you would need to rename the texture files. Just change the 20 to whatever number is appropriate.

Here is a bigger version of the frame. Unfortunately, the engines cannot be totally masked, but the shape of the frame is more obvious.

I do think it looks better, however, it's a bit large for a stealth fighter. On the other hand...who else is really going to see you in it? ;)

You can get the Stiletto Mk2 here:

The bigger model overshoots the edges of the target MFD. I wonder if there is a way to specify that MFD size.

Pfft, Have you taken a look at the B-2 recently?

Nice work.

I was thinking of the SR-71 or the F-117...anyway, it's not big enough for bombing (unless you fill up all 4 tubes with fulcrum torpedoes).

Now I really want to make a cockpit for it. However, when I loaded an example cockpit, I could not see it in my program, so I have no idea how to model a cockpit.

Yeah, I know. I was just trying to illustrate that just because something is big, doesn't mean it isn't stealthy!
