I would like to try my hand at custom ship and cockpit designs. I don't know what software to use, though, or how to scale/orient the 3d art. Can anyone help?

I have Truespace 3 and 5 (5 is not installed at the moment). I also have Bryce.

I tried exporting a ship from TS3 as a .x file, but the resulting file did not in the least resemble the .x files that I have seen with other custom ships.

 Anim8or lets you convert their files to 3DS (I think that's what it is). From there you should be able to then convert to an .x file. You might give it a try ... doing a simple cube as a quick test (and then offering your new ship to the Borg).

OK, thanks all. I actually found a way to save a Truespace object in a format that worked.

I am building a stealth fighter: all straight lines and edges so it will have a small radar profile. I still need to paint it, but here it is with the default paint.

I am having some difficulty with finding a way to do a texture for it. I'm currently using it as a replacement for the Ferret. I really like the existing ship designs in the game (except for the Predator) but I also like adding variety. The first few attempts created stuff that was either not placed correctly, not oriented right, or not scaled right. This is the first one that actually looks like what I had intended (except for the engines). I might find a way to cover up the engine exhaust too, to make it even more stealthy ;)

Here is what I have so far:

Thanks, Maarschalk. I hope to improve it in the future, once I get the texture thing down.
