Hi all

Hope someone can help.

I just reformated my machine, thinking that my save would be fine, as Evochron is installed on a seperate untouced disk, go to play and its back to default:mad:

Looks like even though Evochron is installed on a seperate drive it creates and stores its data ont he C: drive! WTF, this cant be right can it!?

Hoping ive missed something, at the very least it should have been mapped to My Documents (whihc I also store in a seperate drive)

Heres hoping

Cheers

Unless you changed the location of the save data folder or followed the backup procedure (as outlined here: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3433 ), it's probably lost. Did you at least back up your pilot profiles?

If you want to change the location for where the game stores pilot profiles and other game files, simply create a text file in the game's installation directory (usually C:\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends) named savedir.txt and in the first line, enter the drive letter and folder name where you want the game data files to be kept. Example: C:\\Users\\Username\\EvochronLegends The game will automatically add the \\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends text to the line you enter, so you don't need to include it. Make sure to copy/move the original files to the new location to keep your settings and pilot profiles.

Recovered the pilot file but it maybe currupt,

I get RUNTIME 99 when i try and load it.

Also I have created a savedir.txt file and its not happening

Its got this in is

D:\\Games\\EvochronLegends\\

But no directory has been created and its still lookinmg at c:

If I move the sw3dg folder to the required location on D: then evochron wont run (black screen, not reponding)

and the sw3dg folder gets recreated on c:

any ideas?

Oh lord above have mercy.

There are some things you need to know here. I just did this myself and here is what you need to do.

I have a C drive that is a WD Raptor 10000 rpm for speed and other drives that are virtual drives on a pair of WD 300Gig 7800 rpm raid special drives connected with an adaptec card so I don't have to worry about backups.

I created savedir.txt and it said D:/Evochron in the file. Disaster occurred. I had to re enter my serial numbers.

here is what I had to do to fix it.

I had to create a folder named D:/Evochron/sw3dg/EvochronLegends/ on my D drive
Then I had to copy the entire contents of the folder from drive C to drive D. if you don't do it this way before you start the game, the game won't find your pilot file and will give you an error and your machine will lock up and you will have to reboot with the power switch.

take care here. Remember that once you add that savedir.txt file, when the game starts up it will expect to find everything where the file says PLUS the sw3dg/EvochronLegends string.

Another quick tip is to make sure you keep the savedir.txt file with the binary (EvochronLegends.exe) and not in the save data folder, if you decide you want to split the two folders (using one for the game install and the other for save data).

For your profile, sounds like it might be incomplete or damaged. If you'll e-mail it to me, I'll take look and see if it can be repaired. starwraith.com > contact

OK i've sent you the file thanks.

OK to change to location, here are the steps I took.

Reinsalled game

Ran fine (re registered etc)

Created savedir.txt in d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\

All this file had in it was d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\

Copied the contents from c:\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends to d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends

Run game, black screen

If I delete d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends I get a black screen

Also everytime I run and new sw3dg directory is created on the C: drive.

Pretty sure im follwoing the manual to the letter, so why isnt it working.

Cant help thinking a save path option in the games menu would be easier.

*edit*
would also appear that once you get the black screen, an evochron reinstall is required to get it to run again.
*end edit*

Any advice guys?

Cheers

Chris

Sounds like the savedir.txt file was placed in the wrong folder. If you create a savedir.txt file, it needs to remain with the binary (the exe). So if you copied the contents from c:\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends to d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends like you say, the savedir file needs to be in that full folder folder and not d:\\games\\evochronlegends

Sounds like this time you put the file in the wrong folder and included the wrong text. If you only put 'd:\\' in the file, the game will use d:\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends If you put the file itself in a folder that is different from the EXE, the game will default to c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends. If you want to use that folder and drive, do this:

- Create the savedir.txt file, enter d:\\games\\evochronlegends in the first line.
- Create two more folders within the folder above, sw3dg and EvochronLegends.
- Copy all game files to d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends. Verify both the EXE and the savedir.txt file are in that folder (not the short one).
- Update your desktop link, if there is one, to point to the EXE in the new location.

Just followed your instuctions to the letter.

I get a black screen, and a recreated sw3dg directory on C:

Game files are in D:\\Games\\EvochronLegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends

savedir.txt contains d:\\games\\evochronlegends and is located with the game files in the above path.

Somethings not right here.

In the short term I have created the following batch file to run the game

xcopy c:\\sw3dg\\*.* /s d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\saves\\
d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\evochronlegends.exe

Regards

Chris

In the short term I have created the following batch file to run the game

xcopy c:\\sw3dg\\*.* /s d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\saves\\

Why is the exe in (and your batch file pointing to) d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\ and not with the savedir.txt file in d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends? Again, if you don't keep the exe and the savedir.txt file together, the game will default to the standard location. What I might need to see is a screenshot of file explorer open showing the cotents of d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends and then what the savedir.txt file itself contains.
Vice, has the mechanics been changed so the .exe uses the universedata in the same directory? Updating when using a non-default game directory seems to cause a few some problems.
Yes, as discussed here: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... 2#pid55909

Because so many players kept running into problems with their installation for a new build not updating with the default universe, the game now performs an internal integrity check and will restore the default universe if a mismatch is found, but only if the default universe file is present in the installation directory, a different data file is present in the save data folder, and the folders are different. You can manually bypass this integrity check, if desired, by deleting or renaming any default universe data file in the binary's folder, if it is using a separate folder.

This is also the reason players have been able to restore the game's functionality by just reinstalling it if their original universe data file could not or was not restored properly by external programs or editing.

HI Vice

Like I said I followed your instructions to the letter.

I have since reinstalled which is why the batch file is back to my prefered d:\\games\\evchronlegends directory.

I have now got it working, I have savedir.txt in d:\\games\\evochronlegends with this in it d:\\games\\evochronlegends

So now the game saves to d:\\games\\evochronlegends\\sw3dg\\evochronlegends and all seems to work very well.

I found what the problem was, and im pretty embaressed about it. Especially considering im an IT tech of 12 years experince. School boy error.

But hey ho, all fixed now, I really appreciate your help, and your patience.

Thanks

Chris
