Hitchhikers Guide to the Evochron Galaxy V0.8 released

Post by ruckage »

Hi everyone,

The guide is now in a usable state so I've uploaded it to filefactory for you to try out. I've included a pdf with full instructions. Let me know what you think and tell me about any bugs you find, I still consider this a work in progress.

Important notes:

You will need to copy the universedata.txt file from your Evochron Renegades folder into the Hitchhikers guide program folder.

Due to a limitation within in Fenix (the language this program is coded in) you are unable to close the window by using the cross in the corner as you usually would, to exit you need to press the escape key instead. In a future version I will code my own top bar to include the usual windows functionality.

Download the guide below.

Ì found a bug! It doesn't close when you press the little cro... oh.

Well, in that case it works perfectly. Awesome work.

The system map should be fully zoomable (the map showing the full universe with gate and wormhole connections).
The sector map however is a set scale (i'm guessing this is the map you mean). I didn't add the ability to zoom into the sector map in this version for various reasons, the main reason being that fenix is really bad at scaling images so I would have to draw all the various icons at every scale needed. I may go back and add scaling options at a later date though.

I really like what you have ruckage, awesome work.
Is there a way to get an 'overview' of a system, showing just the system sectors in the screen?
I'm pleased you like the program, that's actually something I considered adding but decided against it as systems can be any size and for larger systems the rendered map would need to be huge to show any detail or be so lacking in detail as to be no real improvement over the system view. Small systems like Sapphire wouldn't be a problem but larger systems like Fauston cover an area roughly 2000x1000x900 sectors.

I think if I do add any more views its most likely to be some extra zoom and display options for the closeup sector map and probably an isometric view to more clearly show the 3D relationship of objects.

This is cool. As a newcomer to the universe this should be really handy. One of things I think ER needs most is a better nav menu. Ideally one that mapped ship positions within scan range in real time, was 3D and pan/scan-able with click and drag/zoom etc (no offence Vice, the game is ace ;) ). This looks like a nifty in-betweener :D
Now if only I had a second monitor...

Excellent Program!
-The race is not to the swift,
or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise,
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all...

...For death is the destiny of every man;
the living should take this to heart...

Excellent program but I don't suggest to new pilots.
Finding the secret places and routes are so exciting.
If you want to play single,and want to enjoy,you have to find the game's secrets by yourselves. :)

EDIT: Never mind this post (for the most part),
I initally misinterpreted some things. Figured out how to use the HitchHiker's Guide properly.

Still, though, it should be possible when browsing wormholes (and some gates - the ones without a specific name like "Gate to Sapphire); to indicate the destination. UNLESS this is considered a "spoiler"? But the app itself is "sort of a spoiler", in a way.

*******************************
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ****
(This post MIGHT LEAD TO dialogue that contains SPOILERS)
... BUT I will try to avoid posting specific details ...
*******************************

Ruckage;

I just got around to downloading HitchHikers 0.80 this morning - found a link to it on Verb's site (posted here in the forum by Verbosity).

I played with it extensively, and read the feedback / your responses / in this thread.

I think it is GREAT!

One MINOR thing;

In SYS MAP mode, if gate / objects are enabled, hidden gates DO show up ON THE MAP (but NOT in the object list for that system).

If enabled the text IS displayed.

For example, if there was a standard charted system named Fuddledud, with two KNOWN gates to two charted systems: Sonny and Cher,

And a HIDDEN, sought-after system named Fuddledee existed, linked by one gate linkage in the unhidden Fuddledud,

Then the object list for gates in Fuddledud will show TWO gates... Gate to Sonny and Gate to Cher.

But if you move around the map you will SEE a gate (stumble upon it), and if the text is enabled it will say "Gate to Fuddledee".

Okay, that is an almost-spoiler compromise. Hidden gates WILL show their text descriptions, but NOT show up in the object lists.

Currently wormholes (and I assume those black holes with wormholes) DO NOT indicate ** destinations ** when the text is enabled for them. It would be easy to do. Since this was not done, can I assume that this was deliberate - since it shows the wormhole location, but NOT the destination, this was to avoid spoilers?

No problem, if that was your intent.

Dialogue, guys.

This is absolutely brilliant! It's a shame it's discontinued. I'd like to see an updated version... I tried it with the Legends but it shows only 7 systems instead of renegade's 18.

Other than that it seems a great tool of every space trader!

It shows 7 pages of systems, quite a bit more then just 7. Ruckage has plans to update it for Legends when he has the game.
Yeah, I wrote 7 systems while I was thinking 7 pages of systems! ;)
