Thanks, I'm actually thinking that the scale for this view might be a bit too big as the images a very large and consist of a lot of empty space. I'm wondering if maybe I should halve the scale and generate an area covering more sectors, it might be more useful. What do you think?

I would say try it and let us look at both ways if possible. :)

Well changing the scale for the closeup view requires changing the graphics and a large chunk of code so for now I will just scale down the original image and do a side by side comparrison. As you can see with a smaller scale you can still clearly see all objects but because of the smaller scale I could render more sectors at a time, I would probably render an area covering 25 sectors (5X5).

The image will open in a new window but make you you click on it as otherwise it will be scaled down.

I decided that 1000x1000 per sector was definately too big so I've gone ahead and reduced the scale to 500x500 per sector and rendering 5x5 sectors at a time. I've also changed the grid labeling so I now have a label in the corner of each sector telling you the coordinates of that sector.
Large objects (Planets, nebula clouds, moons, asteroid fields, asteroid caves and stars) are drawn more or less to scale. Smaller objects aren't drawn to scale but are shown in a slightly more iconic style to try and indicate these objects aren't to scale.
Also notice that the planets look different to one another, they don't necesarily resemble how the planet looks in the game but it uses information from the universe file to create the planet image.

Hi Vice, yes all of the icons and the rest of the graphics are my own work, appart from the HGTTG logo on the title screen which is borrowed from the movie.

This should be a big hit with pilots that have multiple monitors.
You could have E:R running on one monitor and the Guide on another.
The idea of using this on a second monitor whilst playing evochron sounds great, however it's a bit power hungry (especially when rendering close-up maps) so I'm not sure how well it would work unless you have a good processor. If you have a dual core processor you could set the affinity for the guide on one cpu and evochron on the other and that would probably work great, as I don't have a dual monitor setup though I cant test it.

I'm currently ironing out a few of the more annoying bugs and adding the captions for objects in the close up view and I may then be able to release something.

This is definately bringing my attraction to the game stronger. That's some great work as I may qoute myself.

With more than one monitor, it will be almost as having the ships cockpit right at your convenience.:)
