Hiya folks. In the tutorial, it says that I can override the mouse control of the ship by holding alt, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Maybe I should just use my X52...

X52 recommended 
Holding the (left) alt key will suspend flight control for the mouse point mode, the mouse direction mode forces the mouse to operate as a joystick and isn't disabled until you open a console or a menu. If you're using the direction mode, try switching to the point mode and see if you might like that better.
