Video screen capture soft ?

Post by Major Grubert »

Hi all,
I'm looking for a software to make vids capture from the game

I like to know what u use and why ?

The easiest to run and if possible freeware or demo without watermark... and my system is not super mega over powerful so i'm lookin for a light one or one that can work in "not so much super powerful workstation environment" :)

I'll look into all given idea.

thanks a lot.

Sinon sur la page du clan [x] le sujet a ete evoque. Je pense que vous pourrez trouver d'autre.

Video screen capture soft ?

Post by MiaZ »

I have tried quite a lot of the free ones.

My first choice now would be ffsplit

http://www.ffsplit.com/

seemed to give the best qualty ,small file size and not too much fps loss.

Other than that one, MSi Afterburner was ok too.

Of all the different free programs i have tried, ffsplit has worked the best for me.

I'm looking at video capture as well. When I looked at the MSi Afterburner site the programme appears to be a tuning/overclocking programme for MSi Graphics Cards - the only reference to video capture was a mention that you now get 'Predator' video capture bundled with MSi cards.

Have I missed something? :D

tried ffsplit, done a 3mn vid capture of online game

works fine

quality is not so perfect but i used standard settings, touched nothing before launch capture
I guess if configured properly overall quality can be very good, maybe then cpu and ram count, dunno, will try again

standard 3mn vids is about 50mo

Hi Marvin

I get it, found the windows 64 bit version open the thing and...

...this soft run on DOS mode

ok it's maybe something cool and nerdy to enter DOS command in 2014, kind of hipster trend i suppose, but.... even if i know lots of basic dos commands i will not search and learn new commands for a screen cap soft in 2014...

i used the h command for read the help, lol, got a listing of dozens of commands, "deal with it"... this is so unfriendly-user oriented :)

dunno, will maybe dig in if i get no satisfaction at all with other soft

however thanks for the info, maybe with time it's gonna be my favorit

FFsplit is a front-end for FFmpeg and won't work without. ;)
During the installation process FFsplit demands and automatically downloads/installs FFmpeg if it isn't already there.
There's a nicequick-start-guide in the FFpslit forum btw.

I can confirm what MiaZ said: When comparing MSI Afterburner with FFsplit I get better results with FFsplit. I would suppose MSI Afterburner is only available for users of MSI video cards anyway...

that's what i understood to

ffsplit is the easy way for use ffmpeg, but nerds can still use ffmpeg i guess :)

with ffsplit interface i dont even need to open the help file or whatever, very intuitive and fast to use

all output configuration are easy to test out and so on... i guess i'm gonna stick with that for a while

Quality is looking pretty good to me there in that vid.
Its clearer than the vids I am able to make at the moment.

Were you playing game at 720 screen res?

Hi MiaZ,
my screen res is 1920*1080

and in the game conf (i just looked at before sending my answer because dunno if the game play in another res than screen) it say "Optimized"

I uploaded the vid on YT right as it comes out ffsplit, no compress, no resize, just upload

i'm gonna try to capture in 720 or another res to see if i can gain size but not lose so much details, i'd like viewers can read the datas on ship screens (speed, ids on, and so on)

another solution is to capture in max res and then edit vid in video soft for compress the file before upload (i'm big user of Vegas Video for video editing)

precise target will certainly drive way to use the soft :

long third view and slow vids with overlay text will not need as much precision as fast cockpit ones during fight with lots of others ship in area...

oh ok.. youtube had the max quality to view it at 720p, that's why I asked.
If your screen res is 1920*1080 and in game it say "Optimized"
Then you're playing at that res.
Not sure why youtube did'nt let me view it as 1080p?
--
Same here, I want it clear to read data on ship hud, enemies speed and range , stuff like that.

I was wanting to record pvp fights and you really need those details to understand whats going on.

I like to play the game at 720 but it doesn't look that great when recorded at that screen res for me.

The settings I'm using I get roughly 110meg file size for 10 mins.

I guess then YT do some compress to make all vids compatible...
and I guess you better play in higher res in order to capture in best res in order to lost as less as possible after YT compression

YT seems to take up to... dunno.. 1Gb file ? oh just check and see it's 15 minutes... but we can ask for more in case of

if size do not matter then it's definitely best to play/record/upload at max res with minus editing

Are you talking about the bitrate (which I believe is only relevant for streaming) or the video resolution? Default (video resolution) is 1280 x 720. I already made some tests with my 'native' resolution of 1680 x 1050, but after comparing both (watching the lower resolution in full screen) to my surprise I was unable to see any improvement.

done another one 14minutes long...
just for testing overall quality of final result

this one is not bad, even boxed in the youtube page we still can read the different data, and we still can read them when watching the video full screen as well :)

Dxtory, hands down.

Although if you're really serious about video capture, you might want to look into getting a Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI. A bit expensive but works good if you have another PC to do the recording with. It's also the only consumer capture card I know that can capture full 1920x1080 @ 60fps

No worries about HDD write speed making your video stutter, weak CPU making your video stutter, because you're fighting a game for resources etc.

Hi Zach, thanks for the information, i dont think i'm gonna go so far into vid capture madness :) but it can be interesting for other purpose, i keep this one for later

So i tried Fraps but it works only with DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology, this means i can not record my desktop nor firefox for exemple, as i'm gonna use the soft for make tutorials and other use i think i'm gonna stuck with FFsplit for now

gonna try Dxtory in a couple of minutes :)

Tried Dxtory, very annoying one... just turn around pushing lots of things for at the end still search for... launch the capture...

deleted

those dev thinks "it look awesomely complicated so it's gonna be cool", while we just want a soft that launch and record with 2 simple clic

FFsplit does that, you launch the soft, you clic "start", and it start to record..
