Does anyone remember those distress signals from I-War 2: Edge of Chaos?
I was just thinking that it would be nice to have some missions where someone contacted you rather than the other way around.
Perhaps it could be a random distress signal of some kind. Maybe a nearby ship in need of protection, repair, or supplies.
Maybe there could even be the occasional less formal contract not from a station but from a nearby passing ship?
It would be nice to have something a bit less rigid than the usual "go to a station, accept contract" method of getting tasks.

Would be a welcome change.
Doing the same 20 missions over and over just makes things boring.
Honestly, I'd take anything to break that mold.

Sounds like an improvement. It's already possible to be asked to trade by a passing ship and the contract coding is there so perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to be asked to do other things by passing ships.

You already get real distress calls in MP. Usually when a pilot has drifted into unknown space and has run out of fuel. You don't get so many now that we can pop a station just about anywhere.

I think it should work both ways, in both single and multi-player (actually, I don't care about multiplayer, because you guys don't have to be coded to do anything).
By both ways, I mean that you should be able to send out a distress signal if you run out of fuel or something, or if your ship damaged or something.
Conversely, the AI ships might sometimes need help, and I would not be above helping them, if there was some incentive (money). I think it would be a great addition.

Thanks for the advice, DaveK. Put a can of it against a blow tourch to heat it up and it worked wonders.

I think the premise of your idea is good. However, I think I'd be pretty annoyed to be spammed by civilian requests all the time. Way worse than hearing the ACE tell me that I'm not good enough over and over again. She isn't very good for my self esteem.
