Sorry if this has been asked before- noob question here.

The Evochron Mercanary features list says it has integrated voice chat. Does this mean all I need is a mic for this to work? I don't see any settings in-game, and can't seem to get it working.

Thanks for your help!

You just need a mic, but it needs to be properly configured and enabled in Windows. Make sure that you are receiving input from the mic in the Windows configuration menu for the device and listen to the playback through the speakers to make sure it sounds right.

Hi and welcome.

Also, don't forget to use the "Talk" button when you speak. (Default Comma/Del on NumPad)

 And make sure the server you're using has the option enabled. For example, Galactica 1 has the "talk" function disabled ... something that only the server host can do. IIRC, G1 does it to preserve bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I am certain the mic(s) on my studio pc work properly, so I'll assume it wasn't working because of the server I was on. I think it was Galactica 1. Pressing the talk key didn't seem to do anything. Does the game show if the server supports voice chat before joining it?

The Galactica 1 server has voice disabled. I don't think voice availability shows up anywhere unless the host puts it in his log-on remarks.

Cool thanks for the info everyone. I'll check teamspeak too. Out of curiosity though, does the game add noise to make it sound more radio-ish? I think that would be awesome... :P

 Yes. In any sector where you have a trade station, there is both "jibberish" and radio calls which are 5x5.

I noticed there's radio chatter, but I meant does the game add noise/distortion to voice chat stream to make it sound more radio-like.

 I think that would only actually happen for transmissions within some kind of atmosphere or during a solar flare or other electromagnetic disturbance. And only if transmissions were carried via conventional radio waves. Evoverse "radios" use digital, very short packets, transmitted at light speed.

So does the ambulance service I've worked with; unfortunately EM interference is hard to avoid :D

And if you want to be THAT strict on physics; there should be virtually no sound effects in the game :P

 I wasn't being strict. I was making it up on the fly. Probably should've just said it's all sub-space radio ... but high frequency (short wavelength) sounded better (radio waves being rather long in the wavelength department) ... and, of course, the entire EM spectrum travels at light speed.

Sub-space. Stat trek talk... I like it :p

It's fair enough to say that they're high tech comm devices, not walkie talkies :D

My inner child just thought it would be fun in a super nerdy role-play kinda way if it added crackles and noise :)

 I think that would only add realism if we also got radio calls for rescue missions ... the kind which show up now and then in the chat. Such that you'd really have incentive to hear the whole transmission. Or if audio is enabled in MP and the guy trying to talk is either far away or near an EM source. (But, since not all servers enable chat voice, it would probably end up in the "unused" bin of subroutines.)
