mining & waypoints

Post by Tripwire »

Hello- I searched but cannot find answers to obviously basic questions:

1- How/ where to I mine oxygen? It says go to way point but there is only one in the upper atmosphere. When I engage the tractor/mine bean nothing seems to happen other than the beam appears.

2- Why do my contracts immediately get cancelled when I leave orbit? Sometimes I will jump to designated WP then message says contract failed.

1. You must enter the atmosphere to mine the oxygen.

2. I've never encountered this myself so I can't help you with that one. :(

Just turn on the beam in atmosphere. After all, people have to breathe something, and these are supposed to be human settlements. The waypoint is higher up so you don't vaporize yourself jumping to the planet.

Never had the contract cancel like that. Just enter the atmosphere, mine 25 units of O2, then fly back out.

That said, O2 mining isn't very profitable. Fly to your nearest asteroid, load up on platinum, then head back to the station and sell it for big bucks. When you branch out later you can buy a platinum mining beam to make the work go faster.

Mining is much profitable in some system than others

in Saphire it didn't pay that much, on Merak or Iota you know you mine for something :)

if you want mine Gold and silver you have to mine on planets !

If you like trade you can also trade items from a system to another, you can buy some items for 500.000 in a system and sold them 2000.000 in another one...

Exemple : you buy a fuel converter, you store it in the station hangar, then you transfer it from hangar to your cargo bay as any other material from mining... see the point ? it's not in your equipement anymore but in your cargo bay, then you can take it to another place for sell, AND have the same item in you equipement...

be carreful about prices, look around, fly a lot, visit a lot of planets ans stations, many trades are profitable and fun (because sometime you must enter station where... you are not very welcome :) )

when entering a station or other place always look at "news" screen for get the prices

 Most new players do their mining inside asteroid fields ... especially those fields which are close to trade stations. For contracts, make sure you don't use the Alt key when jumping to the contract's waypoint. The Alt key is only used for emergency jumps ... it forces a maximum jump (depending on the class of your jumpdrive).

Dont be affraid to go in other system, i do so with my Talon after some upgrades, that was little tricky in Rigel and others, lots of red dudes, but in most case i was prepare to jump, not to fight, so, after some try you can enter an enemy station even with some ship around...

first, learn how to jump at right point and how to take the good direction with the good velocity, you can reach a precise point with high speed

at high velocity enemy missiles are lost, and u can turn on yourself for shoot around (reds, and missiles as well) for protect your entry, while keeping the almost same direction

this is little tricky and in most case you must prepare to jump safely or to die... but it's part of fun about boarding a station surrounded by enemy ships :)

As Marvin says - if you jump out of the sector you accept the contract in it is cancelled

In Sapphire there is a station that pays very high prices for platinum (and other metals, but Pt is the most profitable); find the station and the nearest asteroid field and you can maximise your early earnings :D

EDIT: When you are mining in the atmosphere either listen for the "clunks" as the containers fill or use F3 to look at what is happening in your cargo bay(s) - you have got some cargo bays, haven't you? :)

Thanks for the help. :) This game will take a lot of trial and error. I realized I needed additional cargo bays as well. I have to figure out the hanger shop and upgrade my cargo holds I think.

The hangar is just for storing unused equipment. There's no need to use that until after you're well into the game.

In fact you dont need to use the station hangar to trade equipment, just right click to buy and store in your cargo bay instead of your equipment slot

sometimes things are simple than.. excepted :)

sorry i'm just another Happy Space Noob :) actually exploring around Cerulean, Atlas and Onyx omicron...
