server setup tutorial?

Post by doctor_roxo »

I would like to setup a server on my laptop for me and some guys from a forum i frequent.

But i'm not seeing any tutoials on how to set one up. I've searched here, youtube and google and can't seem to find anything. I'm seeing lots of threads with people having problems setting one up but actual tutorial.

i'm not very tech savvy is the reason i'm asking, so could someone point me towards one or perhaps make one if none are available? thanks.

server setup tutorial?

well i just heard not long ago that ya need a good pc to run a EM server. is that true? if it is i won't be able to cause my laptop is rather old and not that good. but i planned to run the server on it and play on my desktop. but i'm sure a tutorial would be useful even if i can't get any use out of it. thanks capt_cronic

The best tutorial for the program are the instructions included with it. Just open the 'ReadMe.htm' file in the install folder. There are two programs to choose from, one that is 3D enabled for improved graphics options and performance on some systems. Another is 2D only for more 'server' type hardware that may lack a 3D video card. If your laptop is really old, the 2D program might be a better option, but I would test both to be sure.

Well, it's text, so maybe you're looking for something video based? In the instructions, the getting started section will provide detail on getting things set up and running.

server setup tutorial?

as vice says, there are detailed instructions included with the server program
but here are a few key pointers to get your server up and running quick and easy

the 2d version is for pc's without a decent video card and uses alot of cpu %
so a modern (multi core) fast processor is recomended

the 3d version puts the load on the graphics card so an old slow cpu
with a decent graphics card will perform well

the server seems to use very little memory

make sure you open/forward your router ports correctly, 3888 tcp and 3889 udp
make sure you add too firewall "allow" list

the server config file is "text2.dat" located in the default dir C:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenaryServer\\
open the file with notepad and edit as follows;

line 200 is the name of the server, the server WILL NOT connect until this line is changed.

lines 400-404 is welcome messege text

line 500 is the local ip address of the server pc, the address your router assigns. make sure this ip is static

line 501 is the ip address to the outside world, provided by your isp.
remember, if you dont have a static internet ip, you may have to reset this as your ip could change at any time

line 502 must be set to 0 for public server listing. see server instructions to list server publically
for private servers, just leave it at 1 (default)

line 700 is auto connect on start, type enable

line 952 is player limit, max players + 1 for the server

performance tips;

for highest fps on LOW end pc's useing 3d version, try setting pc screen resolution to 800X600 and 16 bit color depth
then set line 800 in text2.dat file to 640X480 example 800=640X480
for the 2d version, this setting is in the "screenmode.txt" file

disable as many backround services you can, anything that periodically runs from time to time will cause
pings to rise and fluctuate. automatic updates, antivirus, scheduled tasks, flash player update, adobe update etc.

I would recomend windows xp pro over win7 because there are less processes and services needed to run.

wireless connection can have connection quality issues so i'd recomend wired network.

other internet traffic on your home network will also affect pings and connection stability

line 958 is in game voice chat enter 0 to disable, this will greatly improve performance.

hope this helps someone
