Desktop icon design preference (New Poll)...

Post by Vice »

Based on the results from the other poll, I've decided to come up with some new designs that integrate some features of both of the old designs (more 'simple'/'basic' looking while offering some of the newer 'glowing' effects). Here are 5 designs to choose from, some with different lighting effects/positions and a few structural differences. Please vote for the one you like best and if you like more than one, simply post a reply with comments.

Design 2 has a nice "view a planet from space" feel :)

I voted for number 3 but was wondering if you could or would think about a combo such as below? Just a stray thought.

That's a possibility also, was just trying to avoid the kind of cluttered look of the older design that some didn't seem to like.

Did same. Voted for 3 (cause it ties to Evochron), but the planet is a nice addition as per Thetiebers quote.

I think what'd I really like to see is something that ties it all together. So, space ships, planets, and Evochron.

So, same icon as Thetiebers, but the verticle line in the "E" would be a rocket. So, maybe similar to the old V2 rocket standing on its tail fins. You could slim it down a little so people would more easily understand that its forming an E.

Hope that made sense. Yeah, more clutter, I guess. Using the old standing on it's tail V2 design is kinda retro : )

Hey, I know the reason I thought of it. Anyone remember Tom Corbett? Series of fiction books about a guy (I can't remember if he had a side kick) that flew around in space. Anyway, I think part of the books "icon" was a rocket. Cool series. Back when everyone was sure that we'd be living on the moon in just a few years.

Sigh. Such dreams.

Hmmm. Reminds me of Tom Swift series of stories. Damn. Am I dating myself?

O well, whatever you come up with, Vice, I'll buy it.

Thanks,

Tarl

For those of you voting for 3, I'd like to verify that you'd prefer the lighting effect to come from the top and bottom rather than from the central icon structure in the middle as in design 5?

Yep, it seems to give a balanced effect that way.:)

To be honest i think all of them would be "lost" in a desktop, there is to much information in all of them BUT this is a pole so i choose the second, more open spaces.
The idea of putting the E in front of the planet is nice, i would keep it dark (light from the planet behind, shadow the E in the front), it might work better having a contrast like that.

So number 2 with a tweak (if possible).

Very interesting, thanks for the votes and comments. Design #2 is obviously a lead choice (I've cleaned it up a bit). I think I'll keep design #5 on the list and add another possibility using a blank center area with a larger E in the middle. Then the rest will be dropped from consideration. So here are the three leading designs:

Design 2:

Design 3:

So of these three finalists, which looks best to you?

You're very quick. :)
Design 1 in my opinion out of the finalists.

Design 1 - it's the only one with a space feel; the E of the other two could stand for anything

A stray thought and not a suggestion! - I doubt that it would scale down enough but one of the wire frame ships like in the "Development" title for the expansion page would be very space and very Evochron centred; Anyway, it's an icon after all - and it's great (and typical of Evochron) to asked for our opinion! :)

The point you mention is indeed why it's tough to use certain designs. This icon has to scale well down to 32X32, which makes smaller details difficult to show. Small/narrow lines on a wireframe model would probably be too fine to scale well. The planet might be the best fit, but I wanted to make sure it looks best to most of you before I spent more time on it.

The 3rd one is the most recognizable, it has cleaner spaces in it although it might not be as "space feeling" as the rest of them.

The planet view idea is really great, but I'd keep the E forever as the identity of the game.

I vote 2 in this pool.

:o Either 2 or 3 ... otherwise I know I'll be clicking on the EM icon (instead of the X-tended icon) when in a rush.
