Wow I suck at this game.
Spent about two hours on this mission where you protect this capital ship from 5 enemy fighters... I got totally owned. I cannot beat this mission. My dog fighting skill sucks. Enemies would be hitting me and I'd have no idea where the fire is coming from. I can hit the guy im chasing, but thats about it. I need better weapons, but I need credits for better weapons. Im basically stuck

Check out the first post in this topic. Lots of great info for getting started.

In the beginning, you can do mining in the asteroids area for diamonds and platinum and earn some pretty decent cash. You can also do the missions for rescuing the escape pods and locating items in space. You'll be surprised how fast you can build your cash up. If doing mining, upgrade your ship to have 5 cargo bays as soon as possible. Once you have some decent cash, you can upgrade your ship for doing battle also. Take your time and enjoy the game.

Those escort missions can be hard sometimes, even for experienced pilots. From post: 132788, Topic: tid=9062, author=drfeelgood wrote:Spent about two hours on this mission where you protect this capital ship from 5 enemy fighters... Jump into MP and even just 1 other pilot makes them easy.
You can hire some wingman in SP, they might help a little.
Combat takes some time to get the hang of it, but then when it clicks, you'll know how to take down those 5 enemy fighters easy.
Get used to using thrusters and strafe rather then fly straight.
Fly with IDS off, most of the time, they attract missiles and make counter measures less effective.
Switching IDS back on while slowing and turning is useful through.
Have a ready finger on the countermeasures button.
Cm's do work well as long as you have no Afterburners or IDS on when you release them.
Map a key for Target nearest enemy ship is useful, i use a lot.
I also use the target enemy in front a lot to switch targets, but
go back to nearest enemy a lot. The red that is closest to you will be the one doing most of the damage to your ship usually.
Get a cannon relay sys and shield boost 5 if you don't have already.
Use a cannon with good range and firing rate. Icespear is always a good choice, but personally I prefer the flarebeam. : )

I normally use a shield recharger now days.
If not using one, set energy full to shields when wep energy has filled up, then go in and to the side fast, when in range fire both beams and cannons as you fly past.
During the attack your wep energy will get used up so now while you have flown past the group and out of range, set energy back to weapons. While you slow and turn around wep energy will fill up so by the time you are getting in range for the next attack you will be all set to put Energy back to shields.
If you use shield recharger mostly you can just leave
energy set to full for weapons.
