Dedicated server suggestions?

Post by Glove »

Hey I just purchased the game today and was planning on setting up a dedicated server for my guild. However, any other time we have set up servers for a game TF2, Brink, Crysis 2, Battlefield, Minecraft, Left 4 Dead, ect there was always a company like gameservers or multiplay that would set the box up for us and just give ftp access. Depending on the game/population cap it usually runs $15-$45/month but since none of our usual server services support this game a "dedicated server box" runs $150-300/month which... is a tad pricey.

So I was just wondering if anyone knew of any sites that would be reasonable for hosting a server for this game?

Hi Glove, welcome to the game and forum. Hope to see you out there some time!....;)

At the moment there are 10 Servers up and running which are all free to play on so yours would be number 11.
I do not know why you would want to pay for a dedicated Server. It would be Cheaper to set up your own!;)

I guess upstream bandwidth is always a problem for servers run from residential IPs; atleast it is here in the UK as the majority have less than 1Mb/s upstream.

Well I have business class internet for the area that I'm in 20 MB/s down 2 MB/s up. However I wouldn't trust my connection with 5 or more people connecting to it. We do have a linux box that we use to run our website/mumble/minecraft server but I've been reading through the support forums and people seem to have issues with the server software and linux.

Also is there any recommended system requirements for the server to run the game, I only see the information for running the client. I'm checking with gameservers support this morning to see if they were willing to install the game on one of their boxes how much it would cost but I would need to know how much Ram/processor power it needs. They run boxes with multiple games and allocate a % of the memory/processor to your game server depending on what it needs and I would need to know how much to tell them.

Hi glove,

you'll have problems running the server on a commercial box due to its ( the server prog) requiring of d9x and the lack of dx support in remote tools, best solution I every cam up with was a specialised version of vnc which cost around £2,000.

on a side note, I used to run a server for EL via virgin and could handle 20+ players, even with players from japan + US as well as europe, never managed that hosting CS:S on a dedicated server box.

I still have a really good box sitting on the shelf, which I don't use anymore. It's an oldie, but has proven to be reliable. It's hardware config is quite high-end and I don't think it will have any problems handling 100+ players from all over the world at the same time.
I would gladly offer it as a standalone server for EM. I will ask a small monthly fee of just €50 though, just so I can pay for the power bill.

Interested? Here's an image of it:
