Now available! - Upated and Extended: A Hints, Tips and Myths Guide to Evochron

The guide is now available from SeeJay's site.

http://evochron.junholt.se/menus/downloads.htm

along with the Tech Manual!

The new version is 67 pages long; the Word Doc is 13+MB (available later this evening because I can't email it to SeeJay so it's having to go via my bit of webspace!!)- the pdf is around 3MB, but the Word version's content table is "active" - and revealing hidden text is easier :D

gotta say im thrilled and filled with these guides etc. great work, allthough it feels forever now to find some little answers to some questions so here i go: i got lvl 5 laser lvl 15 cannon (banshee) the cannon really sucks = low range so now i need to i guess downgrade my cannon to which one? and ive so far seen only lvl 6 cannons to be sold so can i buy anywhere the most basic cannons IF they are the best, and what comes to fusion laser i really have no clue if thats the best laser, could some1 give me advice on this? THANKS!

Here is a guide over available stuff. (No spoiler)
http://evochron.junholt.se/objectdescri ... object.htm

I suggest you try the IceSpear gun (Class 2). You'll find it in Sapphire.
Also the Max-R might appeal to you;) (Found in Cerulean WZ or Atlas and some other places on USS server).

Fusion Laser is the highest class you can get.

Good luck!

Hi - thanks for the kind words gentlemen!

FinFoxx - I made the same mistake of thinking higher level = better! (obvious isn't it? - multiply yield by rate and you get total "destroy power" - right? - well actually no - wrong!)

The bigger cannon use energy much faster - since not all your particles hit, a lot of energy is wasted. A lot of "top guns" use an IceSpear / Fusion combination. (I do as well!) You can fire nearly continuously without running out of energy - and the range is 700. A few even use the level 1 FlareBeam because it's range is 750!

Since I changed from a Phantom (too short a range) and then a Maxim (great range but ran out of energy before the baddy died) to an IceSpear my kill rate has gone sky high!

Edit - I'm using the expression "sky high" in a relative sense of course - I'm useless at combat :P :P :P

So the answer is to try different combinations (remember there are kinetic cannon and some that suck energy or shield strength from your target)

Finally, the forthcoming extension to the game will have tunable weapons so we can all have even more fun being weapons nerds! :P

Well thanks for the Tips and Hints guys :D i really apreciate, so whats actually the diffrent between maxim - ice i see yield and cycle differ what does it actually mean yield more dmg but more consumption? right? also shield recharger does it actually make you less efective? since it builds up your shield energy more but depletes from weapons right? thanks once again

more yield = more damage per hit, but if you watch the particle tracks in combat you can see that many miss - the beam hits though :D

-- on the raw calcs IceSpear = 3000 versus Maxim's 12000 versus Phantom's 19800 damage points per min, but I can survive longer and kill more with an IceSpear

As I understand it, the shield recharger does take energy that the weapons could use. The sales blurb suggests it's good for low offense transports to beef up their defences :)

I just use high class shields and a x5 shield boost :D

You can shift energy to boost shields (defence) or weapons (attack).
Also cannon heatsink (increase firing rate) and a cannon relay system (doubbles cannon firepower) is
a good thin to install.

Max-R does more damage, but drains more energy.
IceSpear has a very high firing rate and it will fire even if energy is at zero.

All weapons are good/bad and you need to find what setup works for your kind of fighting style.

Best way to find out what a weapon do is to ask a friend to fire that weapon at you
so you see what happens to you.

engines only control max speed, NOT acceleration; the IDS multiplier will increase max speed by between x2 and x5 so even a "small" engine can give a high max speed; if you are travelling far then jumping is more efficient anyway!

New Third Edition! 140 pages in two volumes - everything (I hope) you want or need to know!

The greatly extended third edition is now avaible on SeeJay's website

http://evochron.junholt.se/menus/downloads.htm

It is now in 2 (pdf) volumes and is more than 140 pages in total!

• Volume One is a compilation of hints/tips/info and is primarily text based. It contains the direct answers (and some discussions) to specific questions plus lots of spoilers.
• Volume Two consists of the (illustration rich) tutorials plus "opinions and discussions" sections describing the preferred set-ups and methods of a number of people.

I must mention Flying Brick in particular; he trawled the forum threads and compiled over 80 pages of questions and answers and generously made then available to the community via this guide. even when condensed it consisted of 60 pages of hints, tips and his suggestions.

Enjoy :D

Part 1 now has a much expanded section on Reputation

There are detailed explanations of
  • how to change your system reputation
  • how to change your faction reputations
  • how reputation changes in MP affect SP and vice versa
  • the table showing how different contracts affect your faction reputation faction by faction
  • a table of which contracts to do what to your reputation with each of the factions (upwards, downwards or no change)
  • how you can monitor your reputations
  • an explanation of why the Navy pick on you even in Godd systems and when you are doing Navy contracts!!
Also added is instructions on how to put those great rank graphics in your signature added (all thanks to Viper for creating cool graphics for every mil and civ rank!)

Thanks to SeeJay for hosting the manual

Thanks also to Miaz and Flying Brick for providing data and evidence for the above

Hi,

Just got the game yesterday from steam and am pretty excited to sink my teeth into it. I have been through the training tutorials which do a good job teaching me the basics but there was still so much to learn. As a very new (and clueless) player, I just want to say thank you to DaveK and all the people who have contributed to make and compile all this information that is really helping me get to gripes with this fantastic gem of a game!

Cheers all

This new offering is a major revision: the two parts of the Guide have been combined again into a single volume. The tutorials and discussions have been integrated into the relevant Q&A sections so that for example everything about navigation (or combat or . . . ) will be found in the same place.

I've added another Contents list with just the main sections given - It is easier to find the item you are particularly interesested in, e.g. nav or combat or . . .

The original contents list remains as it was with all main and sub-sections in it. The contents lists are "interactive" so if you click on an entry you are taken there!

There is a much expanded section on Reputation since it seems to cause confusion amongst both newbies and seasoned pilots

There are detailed explanations of
  • how to change your system reputation
  • how to change your faction reputations
  • how reputation changes in MP affect SP and vice versa
  • the table showing how different contracts affect your faction reputation faction by faction
  • a table of which contracts to do what to your reputation with each of the factions (upwards, downwards or no change)
  • how you can monitor your reputations
  • an explanation of why the Navy pick on you even in Good systems and when you are doing Navy contracts!!
and also an substantial discussion about how to find uncharted systems, stars and planets using the variety of utilities and techniques developed by players.

Also added are instructions on how to put those great rank graphics in your signature added (all thanks to Viper for creating cool graphics for every mil and civ rank!)

Thanks to SeeJay for hosting the manual
