The Speed Inidcator: Revisited

Post by Marvin »

After extensive testing, I've come to the following conclusion:
  • Assuming that 1 sector equals 200,000 subsectors (ss)
  • Testing at different speeds
  • At a speed of 1000, you travel 100 subsectors per second
  • This ratio holds at any speed
  • 100 subsectors per second equals 6000 subsectors per minute
  • 6000 subsectors per minute equals 360,000 subsectors per hour
  • 360,000 subsectors per hour equals 1.8 sectors per hour
  • Ergo, at 1000, you are traveling 1.8 sectors per hour
So, to determine your speed in sectors per hour, you multiply what's displayed on your indicator by .0018 ... or by 6 to calculate subsectors per minute.

For example, you run out of fuel and are drifting at 1800. At that rate, you will drift 10,800 subsectors per minute, or 3.24 sectors per hour.

On a full fuel tank I can travel 2000 sectors in 45 mins. This is 2500 sectors per hour and therefore 1390 times as fast as sublight travel at 1000

Gate travel is harder to evaluate because all jumps take around the same time but distances covered are different; take Emerald to Rigel as a convenient example (same X coordinates). The distance is 1950 sectors and the jump time around 10 seconds (including some acceleration decelleration time). This equates to around 700 000 sectors per hour and is about 390 000 times faster than sub light travel at 1000!

1 : 1400 : 400 000

No wonder clans want the charted systems :P

 Btw, the speeds in Arvoch Alliance are probably the same as those in Mercenary. Only, because of the need to often unload the jump drive in Alliance, it can come in handy to know how long it will take, at normal speed, to get from one end of the mission sector to the other.

 What's impressive is the amount of time it takes to do a bunch of tests. Even more impressive is the stopwatch I found on my son's iPhone.

I use a "proper" old metal and glass mechanical stopwatch (probably one of your ancestors, Marvin!):D

I agree about testing time but it is great fun :)

I had one of those, once upon a time. Long story. Then I had a digital watdh ... battery died. So I was stuck using an egg timer for awhile.

Does it use the time for the egg to hatch as the time? :D

Relatively speaking!. But the heat applied is ussualy to high so in stead of hatching you get a perfect boiled Egg by the time the timer runs out. These timers are very popular during Easter!.......;):P:P:P:P:P:P:P
