If you are docked in a station that either you build or are friendly with, Shouldn't it protect you? Furthermore shouldn't the tractor field act as a shield to protect your ship while you're docked? It seems a little odd that you can be shot at while shopping.
I wouldn't mind having to build the defense batteries but it's annoying when i am docked and have 10 enemy ships coming down on me while i am trying to refuel/resupply.

If you want to be safe, then enter the station and shop inside.

Like Nubarus said. When you dock at the station you can enter the Station and do all your bussiness inside the station with out being vunerable...The field is a gravity and tractor field so it will attract and tractor in weapons fire from enemies. If you want protection from a station in hostile territory you can also buy the station licence but be carefull not to buy a licence at a station where you want to sell your goods for high profit.

Or equip a station builder and build your own safe station in hostile systems.
1 station is each system will do just fine.
