Question about Naval Rank

If you start as a miner / trader can you ever get any naval rank besides a big goose egg?

I've done dozens of Navy missions in Alpha Centauri, while my reputation has risen from the 50s to the 70s I still see Naval Rank = 0 and Trainee. Am I in the wrong Navy, do I need to fly a military ship to get rank, give me a hint. I would like to get access to the more advanced military ships.

A military ship is not required. What you need to do is go into a war zone and complete contracts against Vonari.

Yes, any mission or contract you complete in a warzone counts towards military rank.....goodluck.....

Is there a chart somewhere that tells me how many points are required to attain each rank? It would be nice to know so I can set a goal when I play. Thanks.
