Contracts fail as soon as I jump

Post by Kicker »

Hi everyone,

I'm new and I already have a few issues...
First, when I start a contract, as soon as I warp to its location, the contract fails for no reason. I can clear contracts by going there without warp, but it takes ages !
Why can't I use FTL when on a contract ?
Plus, in some quest, I have to mine Water units... but when I use the beam on lakes (very closely), all I get is oxygen.

Thanks ! :)

Hi and welcome.

Are you manually setting the waypoint? Then you might set it wrong. You don't need to cahnge it.
Once you accept a contract the waypoint is set for you. Just jump there.

The mining is strange. Try putting your nose more to the lake.

Join MP and pilots will help you as well.

See ya out there.;)

You can use the jump drive, just don't leave the sector. Engage it immediately after you've accepted the contract and don't try to move the jump point to some place outside of the sector. Also, be sure to use only the build of the game available here: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmerce ... nloads.htm Or the build available from Impulse.

For water, your altitude may not be low enough or the water may be to shallow to harvest.

 For water, you need to "hover" above a lake: when your altimeter readout turns red, throttle back, put your nose on the horizon, engage inertial and settle into hover mode. You can tell if you're positioned correctly by pressing "v" and checking that your tractor beam is pointed down.

 For contracts, make sure you aren't attempting a "max jump" using the "Alt" key. Accept the contract and only press "F2" (unless you've reassigned the hyper-jump key).

Ok it works when I just press F2... But I didn't change the location before. All I was doing was pressing Alt then clicking on the "Jump" button...
Looks like a glitch.

Why did you press Alt? That option is only if you want to jump to the maximum available range of your jump drive. It is not the 'normal' mode for your jump drive. Normal mode (to the selected jump point) is just the jump key/button by itself.

I pressed Alt so that me moving the cursor wouldn't make my ship go anywhere...

Hey, that's a good answer! :) Just get in the habit of lifting off the alt key before you press the jump key. Or, if you'd prefer, just switch over to the Nav console after accepting a contract from the inventory console, then click on the 'Launch' button. That way, you don't even have to contend with the mouse in flight control mode and you can then close the console as you're jumping.

Ok thanks :)

Another problem : I went in a system... and now everything's gone ! The map at range X3 shows me that there should be something (planets, stations, asteroid fieds), but the map at range X2 shows nothing. There's only... the nothing O.O
I feel like Atreyu now...

I tried to quit the game and going back, didn't change anything... I'm still stranded in the middle of nowhere...

Flip the map to 'rear view' and see if your elevation is above or below those objects. Odds are, you just travelled a sector or so up or down vertically on the SY coordinate.

For those of us using mouse control modes I don't think you can use the jump button (ie the button labled "JUMP" in the hud, not the keyboard shortcut or launch button in the nav console) without invoking the jump max distance functionality. You have to press the alt key to press the jump button, if you let go of the alt key before pressing the jump button your ship will start spinning and a mouse click will fire weapons rather than activate the button.

Its not a big deal since there are other (and better) ways of jumping, but this is the second new player I have run across who has been failing contracts because of this.

Hi :)

About my Y coordinates, they're normal (close to 0), and still nothing around... I'm lost in Optimus Prime...

It's OK I got it ^^
looks like only 2 in the SY coordinates is enough to make everything disappear.
This is a 3D space lol wy do you have a 2D map anyway ? :D

Hey Kicker, welcome to EM and the forums!

I believe a 3D map was experimented with at one time, but it is very difficult to make a 3D map that allows any kind of precision for navigation. When a user click within a 3D map, where exactly is the NAV point supposed to go?

3D sounds great in theory, but is very difficult to accomplish in practice.

 A 3-D map works great if you're clicking on an object ... a star or a planet or whatever. But makes selecting an undefined point in space extremely problematical.

2D is a primative relative of 3D and 4D. Relatively easier to choose a point in 2D...LOL...sorry could not resist.....:P:P:P:P:P

Ok thx ^^
By the way I was wondering, I'm just a miner, so why is it that half the time, when I go in a new system, every one tries to kick my ass ? :D
Plus, how do I hire other ships to support me ? Even with good stuff, I can't beat 6 opponents at the same time all by myself...
A few minutes ago, I destroyed a big warship, I was happy about it, and just after that, another juggernault came out of FTL and finished me :(
Seriously, I can't do this alone...

Ok thanks.
And once I have a big crew, an awesome ship, and finished the first quest (which finally didn't take that long), what am I to do ?
Will visiting other systems unlock new quests like the first one ?
Is there a big scenario that I can unravel by visiting the solar system or the remote northern one of which I forgot the name ?

Thx again for the help :)
One thing that I find odd is the lack of documentation about the game systems. The possibilities seem huge but the training mode is very evasive.
Even the video tutorials on Youtube don't explain everything... :/

I know it's a pain in the ass (I'm a game developper too), but it's important for newbies ^^
