You probably get lots of these but I thought everyone wants to know about me!
Combat: this seems pretty hard for a first IMG mission!
Is it OK for me to hire some wingmen? Or should I not have to for this mission?
Should I wait until my ship has better than class 2-3 equipment? (I havent got any equipment boosts yet BTW.)

You may solve any problems how you want. If you want/need to hire some ships, feel free to.
If you log on to MP you can ask other players to tag along and help you.
I would do some "work" and upgrade your ship/equipment and try again.
Combat is not easy and requires practice, so don't feel bad that you have some problems.
We all had to struggle in the beginning before we got a hang of it.
Most people in MP would gladly train you in combat if you want.

You can jump onto MP and ask for help also. That may be the easy way out though. I remember thinking I would NEVER be able to survive combat missions. Good luck and just keep trying.

In SP, you can and should hire a wingman or two if you can afford it. They will follow you anywhere except into a war zone. If you need wingmen to assist with taking out the Vonari, you'll need to hire whoever you can find after you've already entered the war zone.
