Currently I have a Fusion Laser and Phantom Cannon. Is that a decent config? A couple guys were telling me to get Flarebeam or something like that...class 1. I wasn't sure if they were just messing with me.

hey milty, yeah flarebeam is actually pretty good, the 750 range, very high rate of fire, and very low energy drain more than make up for its weakness.
Another good one is the Class2 Icespear, more damage than the class one but just 700 range. Also worth trying is class 8 Maxim-R, 700 range, but higher energy draw than the lower ones.

Cannon Heatsink, Relay Sys, Shield Recharger and weapons boosted to +5

Overall use what you're best with, but give the lower class ones a try sometime.

Is it that the range of the beam also sets the range of the cannon? Just curious as to why the lower end beam is better than the higher powered one other than the range of it. I think I got this all inside out but just trying to understand how these weapons work...LOL

oh cannon range (the R: Value) is what sets the range of the beam.. There linked together. Class5 Fusion laser probably best in most situations.

Ok, I think some of it is getting through the thick skull here.
I currently have the Phantom Cannon which I think is 220 yield but only 570 range, which would diminish my utility of the Fusion Laser considerably as well as forcing me to get closer to the baddies than I really need to. Sound about right?

I also have in 7 of 8 of the hard points:
Tractor Beam
Repair Sys C3
Cannon Relay
Cannon Heat Sink
Shield Boost X5
Mantis Jump Drive
Cargo Scanner C5

I guess I could lose the Cargo Scanner as I don't really use it much.
Anything else that I should really have?

Also, any recommendations for a good military frame setup once I hit Commander? Currently in an all-purpose Starmaster with diddly for agility.

[HB]Milty. It All Boils Down to Power Usage.You have a FINITE Amount of POWER For WEAPS/SHIELDS. The Higher Yeild the Cannon, the More Energy It Draws Leaving Less for Shields. Also, It WILL NOT FIRE If Your Shields are Being IMPACTED as SHIELDS Become a PRIORITY Dependant on POWER SETTINGS.

A Weapon that Will Not FIRE is a CLUB. I Suggest you Leave Your POWER SETTINGS AT 05/W (Default Setting). Should you have a SHIELD RECHARGER I Suggest Setting POWER to -55/5W. FULL POWER DIVERTED TO WEAPONS, as , with a SHIELD RECHARGER, ALL Power Is DRAWN From WEAPONS.

Yup. Shield Recharger on, settings -5S/5W and finally able to take some baddies out without using missiles. Now I just need to learn the combat dance steps... LMAO First full day in MP and a bunch of progress made with all the good advice and help, so I'm a pretty happy camper.

Well, some good news. Today made it to Civilian Master and Military Commander. Just under 500 kills. The down-side is that I totally suck at combat so I have to cherry-pick the missions and stay with 4 or 5 baddies or just locate crap or pick up stray pods. When I get back in about 5 hours, I'm gonna try a military frame. Probably try an Avenger unless you all have a better idea. Happy hunting!

Great job Milty.

Avenger is my favorite Fighter, even if I use a Chimera sometimes. Good choice.

Keep on practicing, you'll get there soon enough and you will easily pass any contracts on your own.

Thanks all. One thing I'm really pleased with about this game is that I found a bunch of nice people who are happy to help others and give encouragement. I hope I'll learn enough to pay it forward.
