You don't need to level the ship but it helps to see where you are placing the station.

The important thing is to come to a complete stop at the refuel station. If you keep moving or bouncing around because you are being hit by enemy fire you will not be able to refuel.....till you stop moving.....

Not so long if you do as Cronic suggests: set your Energy to max. And you'll know if you're in the slot even before you see the gas gauge go up 'cause your Energy gauge will start fluctuating madly.

The most frustrating thing is when you're completely out of fuel and can't stop. Then you cruise straight through the fuel station and right out the other side...

I have successfully reached the Earth with a Build Constructor equipped (fuel processor wasn't good option - everytime I deployed it and started refuelling, reds arrived and I burnt more fuel to kill them than I could refuel until new bandits arrived). Then I took some tractor beam mission at Sol, and departed back to Alpha Centauri with the Mine/Tractor Beam equipped, instead of the Build Constructor. After awhile, when the fuel level started to get thin, I've opened the Inventory, and few seconds desperately looked at the Build Constructor in my cargo... ooops!
So in panic I have opened the EvoMetrics, and while zooming around the Sol system suddenly discovered the wormhole to Pearl nearby! I've quickly entered new coords to my autopilot target, crossed fingers, and launched.
Arrived at NAV point with Fuel level 2 (!!!) looking at the Station, hold breathe, inertial mode, and with very well planned milisecond key presses I was sliding very slowly towards the entrance. When the lights turned green, I had 1. Docked with ZERO!!!
Went out for a smoke...

Now I am docked at "Refuel Station" at Galactica 1, and will have to find the wormhole to Pearl EvoMetrics mentioned. Nothing on my Nav map, nothing blueish out of my ship windows yet. Fuel tank is full, yet I still feel a bit lonely here...

zoom in on the sun in the nav map, the w/h back to pearl is very close to it

Your science ops guy will point you in the right direction, assuming you have one. I like wormholes, I didn't die horribly trying to jump one the first time.
